About Albert Marquès:

Albert Marquès is a pianist and composer from a working-class industrial town outside Barcelona, where he worked in factories while attending school. Shaped early by political awareness and the local punk scene, his musical development was also influenced by jazz pianists such as Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Michel Camilo, and Herbie Hancock. Largely self-taught, he later completed formal studies at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona.

Following his graduation, Marquès undertook formative stays in the West Bank and Cuba, experiences that deeply informed his artistic outlook. Back in Barcelona, he became an active presence in the city’s jazz scene, collaborating with leading musicians such as Marc Miralta and gaining recognition for a distinctive, non-academic sound.

He later relocated to Paris, where he immersed himself in the local jazz community, performing with musicians including Rémi Vignolo and Pierre Perchaud, and serving as pianist in drummer Leon Parker’s quartet.

At the age of 25, Marquès moved to New York City to pursue jazz performance. There, he became closely associated with his mentor Arturo O’Farrill, who played a key role in his artistic development and professional trajectory. In New York, Marquès established himself as a bandleader and collaborator, working with artists such as Ari Hoenig and Spanish flamenco singer and saxophonist Antonio Lizana.

Based in New York, Marquès developed a personal musical language that brings together contemporary jazz and flamenco. He has released four albums as a bandleader and continues to perform internationally with a wide range of American and European musicians.

In addition to his performance career, Marquès serves as Music Director at the Institute for Collaborative Education in New York, a progressive public middle and high school in downtown Manhattan.
