Internet Walk

October 10 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Ingrid Burrington, author of Networks of New York, will lead a free hour-long tour around Astoria focused on the tangible infrastructure of the networked world.  Using the vernacular of a nature field guide, learn how to identify the utility markings, manhole covers, electronic equipment and sensors, and buildings instrumental to global internet activity.

Prior to the walk, Burrington will sign copies of a revised edition of her book, Networks of New York: An Illustrated Field Guide to Urban Internet Infrastructure (available for purchase in the MoMI Shop on this day).

While the book’s main concern is Manhattan, the Internet Walk provides an opportunity to expand the discussion to the unique infrastructure of New York’s many boroughs. In addition to this Queens walk, Burrington will host a Brooklyn-specific walk through Red Hook on October 11, in collaboration with Pioneer Works. More info here.
