Making Art in the Era of Neurotechnology

October 15 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Panel discussion featuring Rachel Rossin and Sonia Epstein, plus a performance by Nina Sobell and Ed Bear; followed by reception

As access to our brain data expands and becomes increasingly more accessible, what happens to our perception of art, our bodies, and the human experience? Featuring artists, neuroscientists, and brain-computer interface researchers (to be announced), join MoMI for an evening exploring how emerging technologies are transforming not only what we create, but how we experience ourselves and one another.

MoMI Curator of Science & Technology Sonia Epstein will engage MoMI LAB inaugural artist-in-residence Rachel Rossin in a conversation exploring Rossin’s work, which uses her own brain data, and her collaboration with Yale’s Wu Tsai Institute. Drawing on brain imaging, neuroscience, and emerging interfaces, the program examines how artists are using new tools to visualize thought, expand perception, and imagine new forms of creative expression.

Prior to the conversation, starting at 5:00 p.m., join a performance by Nina Sobell and Ed Bear: GammaTime is a neurofeedback performance in which participants wearing electroencephalograph (EEG) headsets watch a live synthesis of their collective gamma brain activity. Four 15-minute sessions will take place in the Fox Amphitheater, with four simultaneous participants per session. (Sign up upon arrival.)

Also on view: Nina Sobell’s Brainwave Drawings: A Video History, 1972–2008, a short film tracing the history of her participatory performances and installations leading to the creation of GammaTime, will play in the Bartos Screening Room on loop.

Fom 5:00–6:00 p.m., attendees can take a tour of the exhibition Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body led by curator Sonia Epstein (sign up upon arrival). While the tour is limited to 20 participants, please note general admission is free on this day, 2:00–6:00 p.m. and all are welcome to explore the Museum’s galleries.

MoMI LAB is open 2:00–6:00 p.m. Visit the LAB on the Lower Level for a tour (5:00 p.m.), demos, and hands-on experiences.
