About Pasatono Trio:
Pasatono has dedicated its work to researching, performing, composing, and promoting the musical traditions of the Mixtec culture. Through many years of exploration across Guerrero, Puebla, Oaxaca, and the transnational Mixtec community, the ensemble has learned directly from “living treasures”—luthiers, bass players, violinists, composers, and tradition bearers whose knowledge has preserved and shaped this rich musical heritage.
Pasatono is Rubén Luengas (bajo quinto and voice), Patricia García (violin), and Edgar Serralde (jarana and voice).
Pasatono’s musical journey has taken the sounds of the violin, bajo quinto, and jarana from Mixtec communities to major cultural institutions and stages throughout the United States and Mexico. The ensemble has performed at Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Bard Music Festival, the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston, El Museo del Barrio in New York, Terraza 7 in Queens, Barbès in Brooklyn, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Stanford University, the University of Oregon, and, most recently, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, among many others.
Yet Pasatono’s music remains deeply rooted in the communities from which it comes—from Mexico City and the plazas of Oaxaca to fandangos in places such as El Jicaral, Coicoyán de las Flores, and Yucuquimi de Ocampo.
Pasatono resists leaving behind the sounds with which their grandparents forged their communities: the music of fandangos and celebrations, the instruments that accompanied their dead, and the songs with which they grew up. As contemporary Mixtecos, they remain guided by a simple conviction: their origin is their destiny.
