Confessions of a Straight Filmmaker
On the 10th anniversary of the release of “Julio of Jackson Heights,” a documentary film that tells the story of the 1990 gay bashing murder of Julio Rivera and the founding of the Queens Pride Parade, filmmaker Richard Shpuntoff revisits the making this film with a critical eye on his own processes, deconstructing and questioning his own work. Shpuntoff, who was born and raised in Queens, will share previously unreleased material, and candidly discuss the limits of portraying the LGBTQ+ world as an outsider, and how he thinks his work might have been different if he were gay.
