SUMMARY:La ausencia y la ciudad \, de Cristina Candela - Book Presentation – Q&A with the Author
DESCRIPTION:An intimate evening of poetry and conversation featuring Cristina Candela’s La ausencia y la ciudad / Absence and the City\, exploring desire\, absence\, migration\, and the experience of inhabiting New York City.

SUMMARY:Cristina Candela\, Juan Pedro Jimenez & Dustin Carlson | Flamenco
DESCRIPTION:Join Cristina Candela\, Juan Pedro Jiménez\, and Dustin Carlson for an evening rooted in the depth and tradition of flamenco. Through expressive dance\, powerful cante\, and guitar\, the performance unfolds with intensity\, precision\, and resonance\, revealing the dialogue at the heart of this art form. \n7:00 PM to 8:00 PM (First Set) \n9:00 PM to 10:00 PM (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine. \nFeaturing: \n\n\nCristina Candela / Bailaora \n\n\nDustin Carlson / Guitar \n\n\nJuan Pedro Jimenez / Cantaor \n\n\nAbout Cristina Candela: \nSince 2007\, I have been working as a flamenco dancer. My experience spans a variety of settings\, including tablaos like El Patio Andaluz in Barcelona\, and international tours in Malaysia and Singapore with Chalachi. I’ve contributed to companies such as Maria Carrasco Cia and Apuchelando Cia in multiple roles: dancing\, choreographing\, and producing. \nI’ve also engaged in fusion projects\, notably with Anlage Cia in Granada\, and in artistic-educational initiatives. For instance\, I served as part of the ambassador group for the “Voices of Tomorrow” project under the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. \nMy involvement in the arts extends to film. I’ve acted\, danced\, and worked in production for several short and independent films. \nMy interests encompass all aspects of performing and audiovisual arts. I’m as fascinated with the spotlight as I am with behind-the-scenes work. From a young age\, I’ve been driven by a desire to create – to dance\, choreograph\, design scenographies. My foremost aim is to express my vision of the world as clearly as possible. \nTo this day\, the words of Pina Bausch echo in my mind: “Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.” \nAbout Juan Pedro Jiménez: \nJuan Pedro Jiménez is a cantaor from Cádiz\, in the south of Spain\, deeply rooted in the flamenco traditions of Andalusia. Raised performing alongside the gypsy family Romeros de Vejer\, he developed his voice within an environment where flamenco is lived as a daily\, communal expression. \nA singer and guitarist\, Juan Pedro refined his musical foundation through formal studies at the Royal Conservatory\, while maintaining a strong connection to the oral and lived traditions of cante. His singing carries the depth\, intensity\, and emotional directness characteristic of his homeland. \nHe has performed extensively throughout Andalusia\, including appearances at the Ferias of Sevilla\, Jerez\, El Puerto de Santa María\, Sanlúcar\, Algeciras\, and Córdoba. He has also participated in El Rocío with the Hermandad de Jerez\, as well as in Peñas Flamencas and festivals across the Province of Cádiz. \nWherever he performs\, Juan Pedro Jiménez brings a voice shaped by tradition\, experience\, and a profound connection to the cultural landscape of southern Spain.

The band’s debut album\, One Day Wonder\, was released in May 2019 and received a Grammy nomination that year in the category of “Best Large Jazz Ensemble”. This recording was hailed by Jazz Timesas being “the sort of debut that should make big-band fans not only take notice but hunger for more.” \n \nAbout Michale Thomas: \nGrammy-winning saxophonist\, composer\, and arranger Michael Thomas has been an active member of the New York City jazz community since arriving in 2011. SUMMARY:Eric Stern’s Cuban Jazz Project
DESCRIPTION:A vibrant fusion of Cuban timba and American jazz\, this trio blends infectious dance rhythms with bold improvisation and harmonic depth\, creating a fresh sound that honors both traditions while pushing them forward. \n7:30 pm to 8:30 (First Set) \n9:30 pm to 10:30 (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover Charge for Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nEric Stern – Piano \n\n\nGeorge Greenhill  – Drums \n\n\nJohn Benitez – Bass \n\n\nAbout: Eric Stern’s Cuban Jazz Project: \nIt is a new trio. The project aims to seamlessly blend two genres of music – Cuban timba\, the cuban dance music of Elito Reve\, Alex Abreu\, Los Van Van\, and others\, and American jazz\, which Eric grew up with in Brooklyn – the music of Thelonious Monk\, Charlie Parker\, Bud Powell\, and the great American Songbook. By incorporating jazz improvisation and harmonic innovation into the format of a standard cuban timba band\, never losing danceability or rhythmic sensibility\, the project blends both timba and jazz into one music\, honoring both traditions while moving the music forward\, together. \nAbout Eric Stern: \nEric Stern is a pianist and composer based in New York City. Eric plays a variety of genres of music\, including latin jazz with John Benitez\, salsa with Carabali\, modern jazz with Noah Myers’ Sonder\, hip-hop with Good Lives Crew\, and straight-ahead jazz with a myriad of young artists. Eric’s ability to blend these influences seamlessly into any performance\, while staying authentic to each genre\, has allowed Eric to quickly establish himself as a rising star in the NYC music scene.

SUMMARY:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet — Contemporary Tango
DESCRIPTION:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet opens the evening with contemporary tango led by Latin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo\, blending Argentine tradition with modern energy\, lyrical depth\, and expressive improvisation. \n7:00 pm to 8:00 pm (First Set) \n9:00 pm to 10:00 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover charge Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nNicolás Danielson – violin \n\n\nRodrigo Ávalos – bandoneón \n\n\nMartha Kato – piano \n\n\nPedro Giraudo – bass \n\n\nAbout Pedro Giraudo: \nLatin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo is one of the most compelling voices in contemporary tango. A native of Argentina and long based in New York\, Giraudo has become an active cultural ambassador of tango\, expanding its language while honoring its deep tradition. \nAfter two decades performing with some of the most important interpreters of tango\, he debuted his own Tango Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing in 2015\, establishing himself as a leading figure in the global tango scene. His 2018 album Vigor Tanguero won the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Tango Album. In 2014\, he recorded bass on Rubén Blades’ Tangos\, which won both a Grammy and a Latin Grammy. \nGiraudo has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists including Pablo Ziegler\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Branford Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, Regina Carter\, Miguel Zenón\, and William Cepeda\, among many others. He has performed at major venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Blue Note (USA & Japan)\, Birdland\, and London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. \nAs a composer and arranger\, Giraudo bridges Argentine tango\, classical forms\, and jazz improvisation with striking orchestral depth. He has conducted the WDR Big Band and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra\, and has been commissioned by major cultural institutions to create new works celebrating Argentine and Afro-Argentine heritage. \nHis work reflects both mastery of tradition and fearless contemporary exploration. \nAbout Pedro Giraudo Quartet: \nThe Pedro Giraudo Quartet represents the evolution of tango in its most intimate and dynamic form. Drawing from the traditional orquesta típica\, the transformative language of Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo\, and contemporary compositional approaches\, the quartet offers a sound that is both rooted and forward-looking. \nThrough lush harmonies\, intricate counterpoint\, and passionate improvisation\, the ensemble reimagines tango as a living\, breathing art form. Giraudo’s compositions and arrangements create a dialogue between Argentine tradition and modern jazz sensibilities\, preserving the emotional depth and rhythmic intensity of tango while expanding its expressive possibilities. \nThe quartet’s performances balance refinement and fire\, honoring the past while embracing the future of tango on the international stage.
