SUMMARY:John Yao & His 17-Piece Instrument / Jazz.
DESCRIPTION:John Yao & His 17-Piece Instrument delivers a bold\, modern take on big band jazz—fusing swing\, Latin grooves\, and adventurous writing with one of NYC’s most dynamic ensembles. \nPresented by Acoustic Memories \nTime: 7:00PM. to 7:30PM (Open Rehearsal);\n8:00PM (Concert) \nAdmission: $20 COVER \nFeaturing: \n\n\nTrumpets: \nNick Marchione\, Stuart Mack\, David Neves\, Mark Collins \n\n\nTrombone: \nMatt McDonald\, John Yao\, Nick Vayenas\, Jeff Nelson \n\n\nSaxophones: \nAlejandro Aviles\, Hashem Assadullahi\, Sam Dillon\, Paul Jones\, Carl Maraghi \n\n\nRhythm: \nPiano: Hyuna Park ; Bass: Robert Sabin; Drums: Jeff Davis. \n\n\nAbout John Yao & His 17-Piece Instrument: \nJohn Yao and His 17-piece Instrument (JY-17 for short) is the long-standing passion project of trombonist and composer John Yao featuring his original compositions and arrangements which explore the boundaries of harmony\, color\, texture and rhythm. The 17-piece ensemble is comprised of New York City’s finest jazz musicians including members of Grammy- award winning ensembles such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra\, both of which Yao has been a regular substitute for many years. The band’s debut album Flip-Flop was released in 2015 and received critical acclaim. DownBeat says\, “[Flip-Flop] showcased Yao’s unpredictable compositions and inventive arrangements\, which spring from tradition while pointing toward future portals.” Yao’s compositions and arrangements are post-bop\, experimental and aim to explore new sounds for big band. “At times angular and broken\, other times linear and swinging\, he offers a broad view of the possibilities of jazz composition\,” says Jim McNeely of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. In 2016\, Yao founded the Big Band & Beyond Concert Series which featured the premier of new works for the JY-17 as well as a six-month residency at the ShapeShifter Lab in Brookyln\, NY. \nAbout John Yao:\nFor almost twenty years\, John Yao has been honing his talents as a trombonist\, composer and arranger\, and cementing his place on the New York City jazz scene. Yao’s lyrical soloing and expressive\, round tone\, combined with his relentless drive to push the boundaries of harmony and rhythm\, have established him as a unique and forward-thinking jazz talent. Yao has earned wide acclaim. In April 2025 he was appointed to the 100th class of Guggenheim Fellows in the field of Music Composition. In 2023\, Yao earned a place in both the Rising Star Trombone and Rising Star Big Band categories in the DownBeat Critics Poll. Lucid Culture proclaims\, “John Yao is one of New York’s elite trombonists\,” and All About Jazz calls him “a strong compositional voice and effective band-leader able to use his 17-piece band to paint across a wide spectrum and infuse his complex writing with a thoughtful balance of audacity\, structure\, humor\, and sonic might.” \nMasterfully leading and composing the music for both his large and small ensemble\, Yao has released five albums as a leader. As a trombonist\, Yao has worked extensively as a sideman for Grammy-award winning New York City ensembles\, such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. He has also performed with such esteemed musicians as Paquito D’Rivera\, Eddie Palmieri\, Danilo Perez\, Chris Potter and Kurt Elling\, among many others. As a composer\, Yao has been commissioned by Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra\, JMI Jazz World Orchestra Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia\, JMI Jazz World Orchestra\, Arsonore Spirit Orchestra and numerous other ensembles abroad both educational and professional. \nAn in-demand educator\, Yao serves as Assistant Professor of Trombone at Berklee College of Music and Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and as Adjunct Professor of Music at Molloy University. He is an XO Brass Clinician\, as well as an active guest artist and soloist at colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad.

SUMMARY:Emilio Solla & La Inestable de Brooklyn – Handmade (Album Preview) | First Set
DESCRIPTION:This performance previews Handmade\, the upcoming release by Emilio Solla & La Inestable de Brooklyn\, blending nuevo tango\, Latin American music\, and jazz in a powerful nine-piece ensemble led by Emilio Solla. \nAdmission: $20 – Cover at the Mezzanine \n9:00pm to 10:00pm( Second Set) \nFeaturing:\nSara Caswell – Violin\nRodolfo Zanetti – Bandoneon\nAlejandro Avilés – Reeds\nTerry Goss – Reeds\nDavid Smith – Trumpet\nMike Fahie – Trombone\nEdward Pérez – Bass\nRogério Boccato – Drums\nEmilio Solla – Piano & Composer \nAbout La Inestable de Brooklyn: \nThis band is a nine-piece orchestra with an unusual instrumental combination that includes two reed players\, one trumpet\, one trombone\, accordion\, violin\, piano\, double bass\, and drums. This peculiar ensemble\, made up of many different smaller units\, can project textures and sounds that evoke a wide range of styles and influences. Commenting on a performance by Solla\, The New York Times said\, “The virile throb of Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango was omnipresent in the pianist Emilio Solla’s stately pulse.” While the influence of the great creator of modern tango is present in Solla’s compositions\, he takes a broader approach\, from academic counterpoint writing to free improvisation\, from traditional tango and Latin American sounds to a standard trio plus horns\, bringing at times the classical color of the greatest and most distinctly American art form: jazz music. \nAbout Emilio Solla: \nPianist/Composer/Arranger/Bandleader/Educator. A Latin Grammy winner and multi-Grammy nominee\, Argentine-born and New York-based pianist and composer Emilio Solla’s first band\, Apertura (1983-1989)\, was praised by Astor Piazzolla as one of the most interesting new sounds in the Buenos Aires scene in 1986. Today\, with eleven CDs as a bandleader and more than forty as an arranger/producer\, he is regarded by peers and critics as one of the most outstanding and unique composers in the Tango-Jazz field\, a musical language that blends Argentine tango and folk with jazz and other contemporary music styles. He has performed all around Europe\, Japan\, the US\, and Latin America\, receiving rave reviews at many of the most important jazz houses and festivals\, such as Bimhuis\, Lincoln Center\, Marciac\, Blue Note\, Fasching\, and more. \nSolla moved to New York in 2006\, and since then\, he has composed for\, recorded with\, and toured alongside jazz and classical music greats such as Paquito D’Rivera\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Edmar Castañeda\, and Cristina Pato\, in addition to performing regularly with his various projects at venues like Jazz Standard\, Jazz at Lincoln Center\, and Birdland. Former members of his bands include jazz stars Donny McCaslin\, Omer Avital\, Jorge Rossy\, Jeff Ballard\, and others. \nHe continues to tour Europe and the US while working as a freelance arranger and pianist on different projects in New York. His New York-based quintet\, Bien Sur!\, released its first CD in 2010\, featuring special guest Billy Hart. This album was included in the ‘Best of 2010’ list by DownBeat Magazine. Since November 2010\, he has been leading a nine-piece orchestra\, La Inestable de Brooklyn\, which features some of the strongest jazz players in NYC. Their first CD\, ‘Second Half’ (2015)\, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. In November 2014\, Solla’s first symphonic work had its world premiere at the Palau de la Música during the Barcelona Jazz Festival and its US premiere at Chicago Symphony Hall. In 2017\, he returned to Buenos Aires for the premiere of the symphonic version of his ‘Suite Piazzollana.’ In 2018\, he began composing for a new project\, the Tango Jazz Orchestra\, a 17-piece big band that elevates his blend of Latin American sounds and jazz to new levels of accomplishment. This orchestra released its first album\, ‘Puertos\,’ on August 28\, 2019\, which won the Latin Grammy in 2020 for Best Jazz Album. One of Solla’s compositions\, ‘La Novena\,’ was nominated for a Grammy in 2019 for Best Instrumental Arrangement.

SUMMARY:Making Sense of Money: Art + Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 2nd Story Movement for a creative brainstorm on how to build wealth in and for our families & communities.\n\n\nJoin Street Works @ 2nd Story Movement for a creative brainstorm on how to build wealth in and for our for our families & communities. \nMany of us haven’t had the opportunity to to learn about how to navigate money\, wealth\, and the financial systems that shape our lives. Starting in 2026\, we’re working to create more artistic spaces to explore wealth gaps\, wealth literacy\, and planning for the long term together. \nEventually\, we’re aiming to build a wealth + climate literacy training or curriculum designed and led by our community. To get there\, we’re first clarifying what’s needed\, grounding in art\, and getting feedback on the sketch of a curriculum. We also welcome co-leaders interested in designing something from scratch! \nThis was started by a small group who built their financial knowledge from public resources and get how hard it is to learn the secrets of a system that is gated by design. We hope we can be a place to learn exactly how people in America build wealth over time\, imagine alternatives to the unjust systems that have created extreme wealth inequality\, and speak openly about goals so we can financially destress together. \nLearn more here: https://www.street-work.org/news/03/08/26-130pm-making-sense-of-money-art-dialogue

SUMMARY:Eric Stern’s Cuban Jazz Project / First Set
DESCRIPTION:A vibrant fusion of Cuban timba and American jazz\, this trio blends infectious dance rhythms with bold improvisation and harmonic depth\, creating a fresh sound that honors both traditions while pushing them forward. \n7:30 PM (First Set) \n9:30 PM (Jam Session) \nAdmission: $20 Cover Charge for Mezzanine \nFeaturing:\nEric Stern – Piano\nGeorge Greenhill – Drums\nJohn Benitez – Bass \nAbout: Eric Stern’s Cuban Jazz Project: \nIt is a new trio. The project aims to seamlessly blend two genres of music – Cuban timba\, the cuban dance music of Elito Reve\, Alex Abreu\, Los Van Van\, and others\, and American jazz\, which Eric grew up with in Brooklyn – the music of Thelonious Monk\, Charlie Parker\, Bud Powell\, and the great American Songbook. By incorporating jazz improvisation and harmonic innovation into the format of a standard cuban timba band\, never losing danceability or rhythmic sensibility\, the project blends both timba and jazz into one music\, honoring both traditions while moving the music forward\, together. \nAbout Eric Stern: \nEric Stern is a pianist and composer based in New York City. Eric plays a variety of genres of music\, including latin jazz with John Benitez\, salsa with Carabali\, modern jazz with Noah Myers’ Sonder\, hip-hop with Good Lives Crew\, and straight-ahead jazz with a myriad of young artists. Eric’s ability to blend these influences seamlessly into any performance\, while staying authentic to each genre\, has allowed Eric to quickly establish himself as a rising star in the NYC music scene.

However\, with the collective years of wisdom\, there is also a skill to share and a tip to learn. \nWe gather one evening a month to work on individual projects in a parallel environment. \nYou can sign up on meetup\, calling 718-406-9444\, or visiting A.R.T. at 84-26 37th Ave. \nSource: https://www.meetup.com/queens-fiber-crafters/

SUMMARY:Morning tech and coffee
DESCRIPTION:Hi neighbors! Let’s gather together\, share ideas\, and talk tech. \nSince a lot of us are in permanent WFH mode\, we thought it would be nice to have a reason to leave our apartments in the morning and interact with real live friendly faces in our neighborhood. \nThis is a host-free event with no specific agenda. Let’s meet up and chat in the morning: \n\nWhat are you working on?\nWhat tech are you learning?\nWhat tech questions do you have?\nWould you like some accountability to help you push ahead?\n… and more!\n\nBe sure to be respectful of our gathering place: purchase a coffee\, tip your baristas\, keep the place clean\, etc. \nLooking forward to seeing you!!
