SUMMARY:La ausencia y la ciudad \, de Cristina Candela - Book Presentation – Q&A with the Author
DESCRIPTION:An intimate evening of poetry and conversation featuring Cristina Candela’s La ausencia y la ciudad / Absence and the City\, exploring desire\, absence\, migration\, and the experience of inhabiting New York City.

SUMMARY:Cristina Candela\, Juan Pedro Jimenez & Dustin Carlson | Flamenco
DESCRIPTION:Join Cristina Candela\, Juan Pedro Jiménez\, and Dustin Carlson for an evening rooted in the depth and tradition of flamenco. Through expressive dance\, powerful cante\, and guitar\, the performance unfolds with intensity\, precision\, and resonance\, revealing the dialogue at the heart of this art form. \n7:00 PM to 8:00 PM (First Set) \n9:00 PM to 10:00 PM (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine. \nFeaturing: \n\n\nCristina Candela / Bailaora \n\n\nDustin Carlson / Guitar \n\n\nJuan Pedro Jimenez / Cantaor \n\n\nAbout Cristina Candela: \nSince 2007\, I have been working as a flamenco dancer. My experience spans a variety of settings\, including tablaos like El Patio Andaluz in Barcelona\, and international tours in Malaysia and Singapore with Chalachi. I’ve contributed to companies such as Maria Carrasco Cia and Apuchelando Cia in multiple roles: dancing\, choreographing\, and producing. \nI’ve also engaged in fusion projects\, notably with Anlage Cia in Granada\, and in artistic-educational initiatives. For instance\, I served as part of the ambassador group for the “Voices of Tomorrow” project under the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. \nMy involvement in the arts extends to film. I’ve acted\, danced\, and worked in production for several short and independent films. \nMy interests encompass all aspects of performing and audiovisual arts. I’m as fascinated with the spotlight as I am with behind-the-scenes work. From a young age\, I’ve been driven by a desire to create – to dance\, choreograph\, design scenographies. My foremost aim is to express my vision of the world as clearly as possible. \nTo this day\, the words of Pina Bausch echo in my mind: “Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.” \nAbout Juan Pedro Jiménez: \nJuan Pedro Jiménez is a cantaor from Cádiz\, in the south of Spain\, deeply rooted in the flamenco traditions of Andalusia. Raised performing alongside the gypsy family Romeros de Vejer\, he developed his voice within an environment where flamenco is lived as a daily\, communal expression. \nA singer and guitarist\, Juan Pedro refined his musical foundation through formal studies at the Royal Conservatory\, while maintaining a strong connection to the oral and lived traditions of cante. His singing carries the depth\, intensity\, and emotional directness characteristic of his homeland. \nHe has performed extensively throughout Andalusia\, including appearances at the Ferias of Sevilla\, Jerez\, El Puerto de Santa María\, Sanlúcar\, Algeciras\, and Córdoba. He has also participated in El Rocío with the Hermandad de Jerez\, as well as in Peñas Flamencas and festivals across the Province of Cádiz. \nWherever he performs\, Juan Pedro Jiménez brings a voice shaped by tradition\, experience\, and a profound connection to the cultural landscape of southern Spain.

SUMMARY:WSR Rockaway Run
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again. Let’s get together and run across Queens – to Rockaway Beach about a 14mile-ish run. Please read the full event description so that you understand what you are possibly signing up for. \nThis is a great opportunity to do something that most normal people would never consider doing. This will absolutely not be an easy run. It’ll likely be hot and humid. There are some long hills in the first half. And\, the scenery along the second half of the run is not exactly the most exciting in our borough. But\, we’ll end on the beach! \nWe will take this run at a casual pace – all are welcome to participate as long as you can complete distance without stopping. This said\, we will be forced to stop periodically for traffic lights and as-needed to be sure that the group sticks together (i.e.\, we won’t lose anybody). \nWhere you can meet us: Woodside Ave & 56th St! \nIf you would like to meet us somewhere along the way (whether for convenience or to cover a shorter distance)\, please message the organizer to coordinate. It is quite easy to take one of the several Woodhaven Blvd. buses to a suitable point that will work for you. \nPlease RSVP by Friday Sept 4th! \nPlease be sure to use sunblock\, and bring whatever fluids you may need. Be sure to bring cash\, as well as your Metrocard for the return trip. \nPlease be very sure that you are ready for the distance before agreeing to participate. This is for your safety and to allow others to meet their training objectives. If you have questions about anything\, please message your organizer. \nThis run will proceed\, rain\, shine\, heat and just about anything else. In the event of torrential rain\, thunderstorms or hazardous conditions\, we will post an update and email all who RSVP\, no later than 7:15am. \nRunners attending WSR events assume full personal responsibility for any injury or illness (COVID-19 related or otherwise) that may occur during or after participation. WSR assumes no responsibility for the health and safety of any attendee. \n*** \nPlease see our full calendar of events \nhttp://www.woodsidesunnysiderunners.com/events/calendar/ \njoin our Facebook group \nhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/wsrunners/ \nlike us on Facebook \nhttps://www.facebook.com/WoodsideSunnysideRunners \ncheck out our Strava group \nhttps://www.strava.com/clubs/206158 \nand follow us on Instagram \nhttps://instagram.com/woodsidesunnysiderunners/ \n***

This recording was hailed by Jazz Timesas being “the sort of debut that should make big-band fans not only take notice but hunger for more.” \n \nAbout Michale Thomas: \nGrammy-winning saxophonist\, composer\, and arranger Michael Thomas has been an active member of the New York City jazz community since arriving in 2011.
