SUMMARY:SCHOOL SHOWS: Holi: Colorful Indian Dance
DESCRIPTION:Ullas\, Sahbhaajan & Prem!\nA Holi dance celebration of Joy\, Sharing\, & Love\nFriday\, April 24\, 2026 \nCelebrate Holi with ullas (joy)\, sahbhaajan (sharing) & prem (love) at our dance concert! We invite students to experience India’s rich folk culture as Abha B. Roy and Srijan Dance Company perform lively dances from throughout India. \nOur Holi show begins as two friends travel across India\, where they meet their co-traveler\, a writer\, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain. She tells them about story that is depicted in our dance drama—in the northern state of India called Punjab\, our travelers see giddha folk dance performed to welcome spring. The friends then go to the Eastern state of India called Bengal\, where they see the local spring festival dances and customs. Lastly\, they come to Uttar Pradesh\, which lies in-between Punjab and Bengal and they enjoy a classical dance composition as well as a traditional Barsané folk dance. \nAbha B. Roy\, the artistic director of Srijan Dance Center and master teaching artist\, has led the Flushing Town Hall Annual Diwali and Holi programs since their beginnings. A master of Kathak dance\, she studied under the guidance of the late great Guru Kundan Lal Gangani and attained professional precision under the training of Pt. Durgalal when she completed her specialization in Kathak Kendra\, New Delhi. She represented the Indian Council of Cultural Relations and has taught and performed in South America\, Guyana\, Suriname\, Trinidad and Tobago. She has also performed throughout Europe and venues such as Lincoln Center\, Flushing Town Hall\, Queens Museum\, NYC Cultural Festival\, and many more. \nFormat: 60 minutes\, in-person performance at Flushing Town Hall’s theater\nGrade Levels: recommended for grades 3-8\nTickets: ALL tickets $10 per person \nThis event is generously sponsored by The Guru Krupa Foundation.

SUMMARY:César Orozco & SonAhead — Grammy Award–Winning Cuban Timba
DESCRIPTION:César Orozco & SonAhead\, winners of the Latin Grammy for Best Arrangement with their song “Camaleón\,” deliver a powerful set of Cuban Timba infused with Cuban son\, modern jazz\, and electronic elements—honoring Orozco’s Cuban heritage and his musical journey through Venezuela and the U.S. \n9:00 pm to 10:00 pm (First Set) \n11:00 pm to 11:55 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 cover charge (Mezzanine) \nFeaturing:\nIván Llanes / Drums & Timbales\nMauricio Herrera / Congas; Backing Vocals\nJorge Bringas / Bass; Backing Vocals\nJan Kus / Tenor Saxophone\nJesús Ricardo / Trumpet\nGiovanni Siveroni / Trumpet\nManuel Carro / Percussion; Backing Vocals\nCesar Orozco / Piano; Lead Vocals; Arrangements and Compositions \nAbout Cesar Orozco & SonAhead: \nCesar Orozco & SonAhead is the latest project from Cuban-Venezuelan pianist\, composer\, arranger\, violinist\, educator\, and now vocalist\, Cesar Orozco. In addition to his work on piano\, arrangements\, and compositions\, Orozco takes center stage as the lead vocalist\, marking an exciting new chapter in his career. He was awarded the Latin Grammy in the category Best Arrangement for the composition “Camaleón” by his band SonAhead. Wikipedia+2CiberCuba+2 \nThe name “SonAhead” reflects its essence: a fusion of Cuban son — a foundational genre that shaped what we now recognize as salsa — infused with elements of modern jazz\, electronic music\, and Cuban timba\, a vibrant style that emerged in the 1990s and has deeply influenced Orozco since his teenage years. Listeners will find echoes of legendary timba groups like NG La Banda\, El Médico de la Salsa\, and Isaac Delgado woven into the music of SonAhead. \nWhile stepping into the role of lead vocalist may seem novel to those who have followed Orozco’s career as a pianist over the past two decades\, it’s not his first venture into this territory. During his studies at the National School of Arts (ENA) in Cuba\, he formed his own band\, serving as bandleader\, arranger\, composer\, and vocalist. \nAfter graduating from ENA\, Orozco moved to Venezuela\, immersing himself in a new cultural landscape that allowed him to explore the beautiful music and culture of Venezuela. Now\, after spending 14 years in Venezuela and 12 years in the United States\, and with the distinction of winning the Latin Grammy for Best Arrangement\, he returns to his Cuban musical heritage with SonAhead — enriched by the diverse influences\, recognitions\, and experiences gathered along his remarkable journey.
