SUMMARY:Making & Meaning of Pride + Community Sing
DESCRIPTION:Can we hold space across generations to have our multiple conflicting stories and relationships to Pride? Queens Pride\, like many mainstream Pride events across the U.S.\, platforms the police\, uplifts corporations\, and chooses silence in the face of genocide. Let’s talk across generation gaps about our relationships with the second oldest and second largest pride parade in NYC. Discussion and singing will be held with youth from GenerationQ in Forest Hills and members of the Queens Center for Gay Seniors in Jackson Heights. All are welcome. \nOur Stories\, Our Songs\, is an intergenerational workshop series with Queens Center for Gay Seniors members and youth ages 12-21 from GenerationQ. We are exploring our stories\, LGBTQIA+ activism in Queens\, and creating protest songs for Pride Month. \nMade possible in part with public funds Social Practice CUNY and the 2026 Queens Arts Fund\, a re-grant program supported by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by New York Foundation for the Arts.

SUMMARY:K(now) Y(our) R(ights) Business Outreach
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our outreach efforts to build community and share KYR resources with local businesses and employees. \nNote: If you are not already involved with Jackson Heights Indivisible\, we will ask you to join us at one of our biweekly meetings so we can get to know each other a bit before joining us on an outreach shift. You can register for an in-person meeting or a Zoom meeting. \nWorking in pairs\, we meet owners\, managers\, and employees at their work sites to share information on ways we can prepare now for ICE raids\, what to do if ICE comes\, what to do in case of detentions\, and where to find additional resources. \nWe supply multilingual materials for employers and employees\, and scripts for volunteers. We begin with a 30-minute training session for volunteers who have not done this work before. \nThis action is rooted in principles of cooperation\, empathy\, and collective action. Effective community care involves building networks of mutual support and empowering ourselves (community members!!) to meet our collective needs.

SUMMARY:Queens NY Practical Philosophy Meetup
DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?\nPractical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic\, practice communicating\, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required!\nPractical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all\, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic\, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.\nThe goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking\, Communication\, and Community \nHOW DOES IT WORK?\nEach week\, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared\, generally in the Whatsapp group\, along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.\nWhen groups get bigger than 7-8 people\, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. \nGeneral Meeting Agenda\nEach Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: \n\n18:00-18:15 – People arrive and chat\, get to know each other before the official start.\n18:15-18:25 – Meeting introduction\, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week\, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.\n18:25-19:30 – Break into small groups – introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic\, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed\, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.\n19:30-19:45 – Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic – each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.\n19:45 – The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment\, so we often stick around\, chat\, and get to know each other.\n\nPRICING?\nPractical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café\, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary\, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you’d like to support\, you can donate here!\n(Practical Philosophy is a registered Canadian charity) \nWHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY\n“I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” – Ekam\n“I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” – Daniel \nFAQ \n\nDo I need to study or read anything to attend?\n\nNo preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic\, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share\, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it. \n\nIs there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?\n\nThe goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions\, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this\, we want to hear from every realm of thought\, and don’t study a particular school. \n\nIs it mostly men that attend?\n\nSurprisingly\, no! Although often\, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys\, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders\, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms. \n\nCan I come alone?\n\nOf course you can\, we encourage it 🙂 \n\nCan I be late?\n\nPlease don’t be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out\, but after that if you arrive too late\, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. \n\nWhere do you meet?\n\nThe location is posted in Meetup and our Whatsapp group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club\, you can see our chapters on our website. \nPOLICY\nTo respect our members privacy\, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment. \nPRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY CLUB – Philosophy\, everywhere. \nWe started in Practical Philosophy back in 2021 and there are now 60+ chapters in 28+ countries\, including Canada\, Spain\, Japan\, Mexico and many more!\n***\nJoin our New York Whatsapp \nFollow us on Instagram \nOur website

SUMMARY:La tienda del Pueblo Clothing Donations
DESCRIPTION:It’s our weekly community clothing swap. Neighbors drop off gently used clothes and leave with something new-to-them for themselves or their kids. \nIt’s a sustainable way to refresh your wardrobe while keeping perfectly good clothing out of landfills. \nThat’s why we ask everyone to bring clean\, gently used items you’d be happy to wear yourself. \nWe’re so grateful for our neighbors who show up with generosity and care\, and endlessly thankful for the volunteers who make Tienda del Pueblo possible every week.
