SUMMARY:Queens NY Practical Philosophy Meetup
DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?\nPractical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic\, practice communicating\, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required!\nPractical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all\, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic\, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.\nThe goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking\, Communication\, and Community \nHOW DOES IT WORK?\nEach week\, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared\, generally in the Whatsapp group\, along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.\nWhen groups get bigger than 7-8 people\, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. \nGeneral Meeting Agenda\nEach Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: \n\n18:00-18:15 – People arrive and chat\, get to know each other before the official start.\n18:15-18:25 – Meeting introduction\, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week\, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.\n18:25-19:30 – Break into small groups – introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic\, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed\, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.\n19:30-19:45 – Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic – each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.\n19:45 – The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment\, so we often stick around\, chat\, and get to know each other.\n\nPRICING?\nPractical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café\, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary\, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you’d like to support\, you can donate here!\n(Practical Philosophy is a registered Canadian charity) \nWHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY\n“I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” – Ekam\n“I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” – Daniel \nFAQ \n\nDo I need to study or read anything to attend?\n\nNo preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic\, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share\, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it. \n\nIs there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?\n\nThe goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions\, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this\, we want to hear from every realm of thought\, and don’t study a particular school. \n\nIs it mostly men that attend?\n\nSurprisingly\, no! Although often\, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys\, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders\, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms. \n\nCan I come alone?\n\nOf course you can\, we encourage it 🙂 \n\nCan I be late?\n\nPlease don’t be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out\, but after that if you arrive too late\, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. \n\nWhere do you meet?\n\nThe location is posted in Meetup and our Whatsapp group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club\, you can see our chapters on our website. \nPOLICY\nTo respect our members privacy\, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment. \nPRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY CLUB – Philosophy\, everywhere. \nWe started in Practical Philosophy back in 2021 and there are now 60+ chapters in 28+ countries\, including Canada\, Spain\, Japan\, Mexico and many more!\n***\nJoin our New York Whatsapp \nFollow us on Instagram \nOur website

SUMMARY:Dan Neville Nonet – Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Dan Neville Nonet presents contemporary jazz influenced by Afro-Colombian rhythms\, featuring original compositions inspired by Neville’s time in Cali and his collaboration with vocalist Xiomara Torres. \n7:00 pm to 8 pm (First Set) \n9:00 pm to 10 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nDan Neville / Marimba\, Compositions \n\n\nAlex Norris / Trumpet & Flugelhorn \n\n\nGeoff Burke / Alto Saxophone & Clarinet\ \n\n\nJustin Flynn / Tenor Saxophone & Flute \n\n\nCarl Maraghi / Baritone Saxophone & Bass Clarinet \n\n\nAlex Pastrana / Piano \n\n\nTrifon Dimitrov / Bass \n\n\nAri Hoenig / Drumset \n\n\nArmando Quiñones / Percussion \n\n\nXiomara Torres / Percussion & Vocals \n\n\nAbout Dan Neville Nonet: \nCelebrate the 1 year anniversary of the Dan Neville Nonet\, as they are preparing for a recording session this fall thanks to the generous support of Chamber Music of America and the Doris Duke Foundation. \nThis special evening highlights the intersection of Dan Neville’s jazz background and his deep connection to the folkloric music of Colombia’s Pacific Coast. The performance draws from his years of travel\, study\, and collaboration in Colombia — including time with the late maestro Diego Obregón — and his continued work as a composer in New York City. \nOver the past four years\, Dan’s voice has evolved through a blend of jazz harmony\, Afro-Colombian rhythm\, and the spirit of the American Songbook\, filtered through his California roots. The result is a bold set of original compositions and rich arrangements shaped by lived experience across cultures. \nA key part of this journey is Dan’s collaboration with Colombian vocalist Xiomara Torres\, whose voice and deep ties to Pacific Coast tradition bring this music to life with authenticity and soul. \nYou will hear airs like currulao\, aguabajo\, juga\, and abozao\, paired with intricate horn arrangements and interpreted by some of New York’s finest jazz musicians. \nThis project reflects the multicultural energy of New York—where folklore\, improvisation\, and innovation coexist—and presents Afro-Colombian music in a new\, elevated form shaped by Dan’s singular vision. \nAbout Dan Neville: \nDan Neville is an award-winning vibraphonist\, composer\, and arranger based in NYC and a 2025 recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship for Music Composition. \nWinner of the 2025 Springfest Vibraphone Competition\, Dan has performed in Europe\, South America\, and across the U.S.\, including the SFJAZZ Center and NBC’s Today Show. \nOriginally from Sonoma\, California\, he began on guitar\, later embracing the vibraphone. In San Francisco\, he collaborated with figures like John Santos and Anthony Blea\, while studying Afro-Cuban music and composition. \nHe earned his B.A. in Jazz Studies at California Jazz Conservatory\, touring Europe with the school’s top ensemble. His debut album Tenerife (2017) featured top Bay Area musicians and was celebrated for its refined Afro-Latin jazz. \nIn 2020\, Dan spent a year in Cali\, Colombia\, studying with Diego Obregón and recording with musicians from the Pacific Coast. His time there led to performances at Utopía and Tamborimba festivals\, and his feature in the documentary Viaje de La Marimba. \nSince relocating to NYC in 2021\, Dan has studied at William Paterson University\, collaborated with artists like Randy Brecker\, and performed regularly at Terraza 7. \nHe produced and arranged La Voz del Mar (2022) by Xiomara Torres\, which reached #1 on RMR’s Latin Jazz chart and was praised by DownBeat. Dan is currently signed to Patois Records with Latin jazz legend Wayne Wallace.
