SUMMARY:K(now) Y(our) R(ights) Business Outreach
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our outreach efforts to build community and share KYR resources with local businesses and employees. \nNote: If you are not already involved with Jackson Heights Indivisible\, we will ask you to join us at one of our biweekly meetings so we can get to know each other a bit before joining us on an outreach shift. You can register for an in-person meeting or a Zoom meeting. \nWorking in pairs\, we meet owners\, managers\, and employees at their work sites to share information on ways we can prepare now for ICE raids\, what to do if ICE comes\, what to do in case of detentions\, and where to find additional resources. \nWe supply multilingual materials for employers and employees\, and scripts for volunteers. We begin with a 30-minute training session for volunteers who have not done this work before. \nThis action is rooted in principles of cooperation\, empathy\, and collective action. Effective community care involves building networks of mutual support and empowering ourselves (community members!!) to meet our collective needs.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Flushing Town Hall’s first-ever Culturethon! On Tuesday\, June 16\, from 10 AM to 8 PM\, Flushing Town Hall is hosting an all-day virtual program highlights extravaganza—Culturethon!—to help FTH celebrate what a fabulous year it has been and to hit our end-of-year fundraising goals. \nThe FTH team will host live as we stream highlights from past FTH performances for . . . free. Everyone is welcome to enjoy program highlights by tuning in for free between 10 AM and 8 PM by visiting Culture Stream.  \nIn-Person Viewing Party  \nAll current and new FTH Circle of Friends members are invited to our in-person Culturethon! Viewing Party from 6 to 8 PM. Set in the FTH gallery\, we will stream the final program highlights over light refreshments. If you want to join us but aren’t yet a member\, you can become a member today for as little as $50! For nonprofits like FTH\, our fiscal year closes June 30\, which means June 16 is the perfect moment to come together and help us start our next chapter strong. Give your gift in person that day and receive a complimentary tote bag and Aigner Chocolates treat\, while supplies last. \nAbout Culture Stream  \nIn the earliest days of the pandemic\, when FTH was unable to welcome the community to our building\, we understood that we would have to find a way to deliver our cultural programs directly into homes. Within a month\, we were offering online programs for educators\, children\, and families near and far. Even after the world reopened\, we knew that not everyone could make every presentation. We took the lessons from lockdown and launched Culture Stream\, where people can watch live performances and catch up on past shows for a small fee. Culture Stream has allowed us to bring our stage into homes\, schools\, and offices\, and to branch out across the world—we have reached all continents except Antarctica.

SUMMARY:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet — Contemporary Tango
DESCRIPTION:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet opens the evening with contemporary tango led by Latin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo\, blending Argentine tradition with modern energy\, lyrical depth\, and expressive improvisation. \n7:00 pm to 8:00 pm (First Set) \n9:00 pm to 10:00 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover charge Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nNicolás Danielson – violin \n\n\nRodrigo Ávalos – bandoneón \n\n\nMartha Kato – piano \n\n\nPedro Giraudo – bass \n\n\nAbout Pedro Giraudo: \nLatin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo is one of the most compelling voices in contemporary tango. A native of Argentina and long based in New York\, Giraudo has become an active cultural ambassador of tango\, expanding its language while honoring its deep tradition. \nAfter two decades performing with some of the most important interpreters of tango\, he debuted his own Tango Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing in 2015\, establishing himself as a leading figure in the global tango scene. His 2018 album Vigor Tanguero won the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Tango Album. In 2014\, he recorded bass on Rubén Blades’ Tangos\, which won both a Grammy and a Latin Grammy. \nGiraudo has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists including Pablo Ziegler\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Branford Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, Regina Carter\, Miguel Zenón\, and William Cepeda\, among many others. He has performed at major venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Blue Note (USA & Japan)\, Birdland\, and London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. \nAs a composer and arranger\, Giraudo bridges Argentine tango\, classical forms\, and jazz improvisation with striking orchestral depth. He has conducted the WDR Big Band and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra\, and has been commissioned by major cultural institutions to create new works celebrating Argentine and Afro-Argentine heritage. \nHis work reflects both mastery of tradition and fearless contemporary exploration. \nAbout Pedro Giraudo Quartet: \nThe Pedro Giraudo Quartet represents the evolution of tango in its most intimate and dynamic form. Drawing from the traditional orquesta típica\, the transformative language of Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo\, and contemporary compositional approaches\, the quartet offers a sound that is both rooted and forward-looking. \nThrough lush harmonies\, intricate counterpoint\, and passionate improvisation\, the ensemble reimagines tango as a living\, breathing art form. Giraudo’s compositions and arrangements create a dialogue between Argentine tradition and modern jazz sensibilities\, preserving the emotional depth and rhythmic intensity of tango while expanding its expressive possibilities. \nThe quartet’s performances balance refinement and fire\, honoring the past while embracing the future of tango on the international stage.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Storytelling Celebration with April Armstrong
DESCRIPTION:On June 19\, 1865\, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation\, enslaved people in Galveston\, Texas\, learned they were free. Juneteenth\, as it’s now known\, is celebrated annually to honor the end of legal enslavement in the United States and a tradition of gathering\, remembering\, and telling the truth and stories about how we arrived in this moment. \nFlushing Town Hall marks the holiday with an evening of storytelling and song led by April Armstrong\, actress\, singer\, and National Storytelling Network award winner whose work has long centered the histories and voices of the African diaspora. Armstrong draws on folk traditions\, spirituals\, and the oral storytelling forms that have carried Black history across generations. She will be joined by a trio of musicians: Mario E. Sprouse (piano/keyboard)\, Ayodele Maakheru (guitar and banjo)\, and Napoleon Revels-Bey (drums). \nAll are welcome. We hope to see you there.
