SUMMARY:Banbas/Exile Author Event with Rajiv Mohabir in conversation with Nadia Misir
DESCRIPTION:Join us discussing Banbas/Exile with Rajiv Mohabir in conversation with Nadia Misir! \nFrom acclaimed poet and scholar Rajiv Mohabir\, a brilliantly crafted retelling of the ancient Ramayan that valorizes the epic poem’s queer heart. \nRajiv Mohabir first learned of the Ramayan from his grandmother while sitting on his parents’ brown-tiled porch\, surrounded by the scrub forest of Central Florida. Descended from generations of Indian indentured laborers who were brought to Guyana under nefarious contracts\, they receive the ancient Hindu epic poem as a tale of exile in anthropomorphic wilderness\, passed along as it was in stories and songs shared vocally in the cane fields. \nHere\, in a singular gesture of deeply layered translation\, this ember of song is passed along again. Drawing on his grandmother’s Creole\, Caribbean Hindustani\, and the King’s English on his own decolonized terms\, Mohabir reimagines the Ramayan anew. Classical in form yet rooted in Guyanese ancestry and its diasporas\, Banbas / Exile is a genre-bending collection of poetry\, stories\, songs\, and reflective prose. Speaking through heroes\, villains\, and animal deities\, this extraordinary translation gives voice to lives shaped by exile and to the enduring search for a world that can hold both difference and communion.

SUMMARY:Dan Neville Nonet | Jazz Inspired by Colombia’s Pacific Coast
DESCRIPTION:Dan Neville Nonet presents contemporary jazz influenced by Afro-Colombian rhythms\, featuring original compositions inspired by Neville’s time in Cali and his collaboration with vocalist Xiomara Torres. \nPresented by Acoustic Memories \nSupport of Chamber Music of America and the Doris Duke Foundation. \n7:30 PM to 8:30 PM (First Set) \n9:00 PM to 10:00 PM (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nDan Neville / Marimba\, Compositions \n\n\nAlejandro Berti / Trumpet & Flugelhorn \n\n\nGeoff Burke / Alto Saxophone & Clarinet\ \n\n\nJustin Flynn / Tenor Saxophone & Flute \n\n\nCarl Maraghi / Baritone Saxophone & Bass Clarinet \n\n\nAlex Pastrana / Piano \n\n\nTrifon Dimitrov / Bass \n\n\nAri Hoenig / Drumset \n\n\nArmando Quiñones / Percussion \n\n\nXiomara Torres / Percussion & Vocals \n\n\nAbout Dan Neville Nonet: \nCelebrate the 1 year anniversary of the Dan Neville Nonet\, as they are preparing for a recording session this fall thanks to the generous support of Chamber Music of America and the Doris Duke Foundation. \nThis special evening highlights the intersection of Dan Neville’s jazz background and his deep connection to the folkloric music of Colombia’s Pacific Coast. The performance draws from his years of travel\, study\, and collaboration in Colombia — including time with the late maestro Diego Obregón — and his continued work as a composer in New York City. \nOver the past four years\, Dan’s voice has evolved through a blend of jazz harmony\, Afro-Colombian rhythm\, and the spirit of the American Songbook\, filtered through his California roots. The result is a bold set of original compositions and rich arrangements shaped by lived experience across cultures. \nA key part of this journey is Dan’s collaboration with Colombian vocalist Xiomara Torres\, whose voice and deep ties to Pacific Coast tradition bring this music to life with authenticity and soul. \nYou will hear airs like currulao\, aguabajo\, juga\, and abozao\, paired with intricate horn arrangements and interpreted by some of New York’s finest jazz musicians. \nThis project reflects the multicultural energy of New York—where folklore\, improvisation\, and innovation coexist—and presents Afro-Colombian music in a new\, elevated form shaped by Dan’s singular vision. \nAbout Dan Neville: \nDan Neville is an award-winning vibraphonist\, composer\, and arranger based in NYC and a 2025 recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship for Music Composition. \nWinner of the 2025 Springfest Vibraphone Competition\, Dan has performed in Europe\, South America\, and across the U.S.\, including the SFJAZZ Center and NBC’s Today Show. \nOriginally from Sonoma\, California\, he began on guitar\, later embracing the vibraphone. In San Francisco\, he collaborated with figures like John Santos and Anthony Blea\, while studying Afro-Cuban music and composition. \nHe earned his B.A. in Jazz Studies at California Jazz Conservatory\, touring Europe with the school’s top ensemble. His debut album Tenerife (2017) featured top Bay Area musicians and was celebrated for its refined Afro-Latin jazz. \nIn 2020\, Dan spent a year in Cali\, Colombia\, studying with Diego Obregón and recording with musicians from the Pacific Coast. His time there led to performances at Utopía and Tamborimba festivals\, and his feature in the documentary Viaje de La Marimba. \nSince relocating to NYC in 2021\, Dan has studied at William Paterson University\, collaborated with artists like Randy Brecker\, and performed regularly at Terraza 7. \nHe produced and arranged La Voz del Mar (2022) by Xiomara Torres\, which reached #1 on RMR’s Latin Jazz chart and was praised by DownBeat.

SUMMARY:Persona: 60th Anniversary Screening (Co-presented with NewFest)
DESCRIPTION:Location: Redstone Theater\n\n\n\n\n\nDir. Ingmar Bergman. 1966. 82 mins. Sweden. DCP. “If looked at through the right queer lens\, Bergman’s Persona could be among the most penetrating break-up movies ever made.” With his landmark drama Persona\, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year\, Ingmar Bergman reached new heights of visual poetry. Liv Ullmann\, in her first of many legendary collaborations with Bergman\, plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone silent. Bibi Andersson is equally mesmerizing as the garrulous young nurse caring for her at a remote island cottage. Isolated together\, the women perform a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference in a scene that has come to influence generations of filmmaking. Shot by the great Sven Nykvist\, Persona remains a penetrating\, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth that has long been discussed as a breakthrough tale of unspoken love.  \nThe Museum is pleased to co-present this masterpiece on the big screen with NewFest\, New York’s Largest Queer Film Fest. \nPurchase tickets through NewFest’s website.
