SUMMARY:Getting in the Room\, Being in the Room\, Staying in the Room
DESCRIPTION:FTH is pleased to present a professional development workshop with Queens World Film Festival’s Executive Director\, Katha Cato. Open to artists of all disciplines and experience\, this workshop will allow us to think about how we show up as artists\, how we find our way into spaces\, how we navigate them once we are there\, and how we stay connected long after the moment has passed. \nBuilt around three deceptively simple ideas—getting in the room\, being in the room\, and staying in the room—this fast-paced\, practical workshop explores how to find and create opportunities to share your work\, how to show up as a strong collaborator\, and how to build relationships that extend well beyond a single introduction. Participants will begin with a brief self-assessment to identify the skills and resources they already have\, and then we will work on expanding them.

SUMMARY:Eric Stern’s Cuban Jazz Project
DESCRIPTION:A vibrant fusion of Cuban timba and American jazz\, this trio blends infectious dance rhythms with bold improvisation and harmonic depth\, creating a fresh sound that honors both traditions while pushing them forward. \n7:30 pm to 8:30(First Set) \n9:30 pm to 10:30(Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover Charge for Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nEric Stern – Piano \n\n\nGeorge Greenhill  – Drums \n\n\nJohn Benitez – Bass \n\n\nAbout: Eric Stern’s Cuban Jazz Project: \nIt is a new trio. The project aims to seamlessly blend two genres of music – Cuban timba\, the cuban dance music of Elito Reve\, Alex Abreu\, Los Van Van\, and others\, and American jazz\, which Eric grew up with in Brooklyn – the music of Thelonious Monk\, Charlie Parker\, Bud Powell\, and the great American Songbook. By incorporating jazz improvisation and harmonic innovation into the format of a standard cuban timba band\, never losing danceability or rhythmic sensibility\, the project blends both timba and jazz into one music\, honoring both traditions while moving the music forward\, together. \nAbout Eric Stern: \nEric Stern is a pianist and composer based in New York City. Eric plays a variety of genres of music\, including latin jazz with John Benitez\, salsa with Carabali\, modern jazz with Noah Myers’ Sonder\, hip-hop with Good Lives Crew\, and straight-ahead jazz with a myriad of young artists. Eric’s ability to blend these influences seamlessly into any performance\, while staying authentic to each genre\, has allowed Eric to quickly establish himself as a rising star in the NYC music scene.

SUMMARY:Jackson Heights "new to the neighborhood" meetup
DESCRIPTION:New to Jackson Heights? Thinking about moving here? Or a longtime local who loves welcoming others? Come meet some neighbors\, swap tips\, and ask all the questions you’ve been wondering about. Super chill\, super friendly. A few special guests doing great work in the community will be joining us to say a few words too. At past meetups\, we’ve had folks from across the neighborhood pop in to share what they’re working on – from local bookstores and Open Streets\, to community organizing\, small business groups\, and arts collectives. RSVP is $5 (proceeds go to the hosts) We’re especially excited to welcome people who are new (or new-ish!) to the neighborhood – but longtime Jackson Heights folks are very much part of what makes this special too. After the event\, we usually head down the road for dinner or drinks – feel free to join!

Led by co-directors Michael Thomas (saxophone\, composer) and Edward Perez (bass\, composer)\, this group performs a repertoire of original music penned by its leaders and described by the New York Times as “soaring\, self-propelling original compositions”. The Terraza Big Band features many of New York’s most in-demand jazz musicians and can be heard at venues throughout New York City in addition to its monthly residency at Terraza 7\, where the ensemble “injects a liberated\, interactive atmosphere into the bar…the audience was fully onboard\, but the ideas were entirely new” (New York Times). The band’s debut album\, One Day Wonder\, was released in May 2019 and received a Grammy nomination that year in the category of “Best Large Jazz Ensemble”. This recording was hailed by Jazz Timesas being “the sort of debut that should make big-band fans not only take notice but hunger for more.” \n \nAbout Michale Thomas: \nGrammy-winning saxophonist\, composer\, and arranger Michael Thomas has been an active member of the New York City jazz community since arriving in 2011. Holding degrees from the University of Miami\, New England Conservatory\, and The Juilliard School\, Michael has performed throughout the United States and abroad\, including tours in Central and South America\, Australia\, Europe\, Japan\, and Russia. Since 2015\, Michael has co-lead the Terraza Big Band\, and the ensemble’s GRAMMY-nominated first album\, One Day Wonder\, was released in May 2019 on Outside In Music. Michael’s work has been recognized by DownBeat magazine as well as the “Keep an Eye” competition in Amsterdam\, NL\, and in 2016 he was a winner of the New York Youth Symphony’s First Music commission series. In addition to his work as a big band composer\, Michael also regularly leads his quartet\, with a new live album of original music scheduled for release in spring 2020 on Giant Step Arts. Since September 2018\, Michael has been on faculty at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music as an Artist Teacher of jazz saxophone in the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Institute. \n \nAbout Edward Perez: \nGrammy-winning bassist\, Edward Perez resides in the cultural crossroads of Queens\, New York\, where he leads parallel careers as a composer\, arranger\, and bassist. SUMMARY:Pages in the Park: My Dog Just Speaks Spanish/Hello\, Tobi! with Andrea Cáceres
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our free story time programming at Travers Park with Andrea Cáceres! \n  \nThe families—and dogs—Tobi meets at the park come in all sorts of shapes and colors and sizes\, but this affable pup likes them all. \nEvery day\, Tobi goes for walks with his family. At the park\, he likes to say hello to everyone—small families with big dogs\, big families with small dogs\, tall families with tall dogs\, short families with short dogs. There are families who look alike and families where everyone is different; families who are quiet\, some who yell or sing loudly\, and some who like to play together or create. Even when there are so many people and dogs at the park that Tobi can’t tell which dog belongs to which family\, he still loves them all! But there’s always one family he loves the best . . . With welcoming\, childlike illustrations and a breezy text\, Andrea Cáceres invites us on a walk through the park that celebrates all kinds of families\, with an endearing pup whose world is a friendly place indeed. Hello\, Tobi! \n  \nA young bilingual immigrant meanders through her city park\, translating for her beloved dog\, in a heartwarming picture book debut. \nWhen Aurora came to the United States\, she learned to speak English. But her spaniel\, Nena\, did not. Sweet Nena loves to give besos\, and she knows only Spanish. She doesn’t know SIT\, but she does know SIÉNTATE. She doesn’t know WAIT\, but she does know ESPERA. And while TREAT doesn’t mean anything to Nena\, she can certainly sniff out a POSTRE! At the park\, Nena may not know what the other dog owners are saying\, but she and Aurora will always understand each other just fine. Borrowing from her lived experience\, Venezuelan-American author-illustrator Andrea Cáceres offers a gentle\, charmingly illustrated ode to love that extends a hand—or a paw—to readers who may feel displaced or are learning a new language themselves.

SUMMARY:Conversation with Jerry Torre: Author of The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Jackson Heights Library for a special conversation with Jerry Torre. In 2018\, Torre published his memoir The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens\, co-written with Tony Maietta. The book was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award and became a top-selling title in gay-themed literature during its first weeks on Amazon\, with appearances and events held across the country. The event will also include a screening of the documentary Grey Gardens\, directed by Albert and David Maysles. Jerry Torre is a Queens-based artist and author known for his connection to the iconic Grey Gardens estate\, where he worked as a teenager in the early 1970s. His experiences there placed him at the center of one of the most memorable stories in American cultural history — later chronicled in the 1975 documentary Grey Gardens. \n\n\n(718) 899-2500\nGet directions to event.\n\nAUDIENCE\nAdults
