SUMMARY:Marcio Philomena Trio | Brazilian Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Marcio Philomena Trio presents a meeting of Brazilian masters shaping a contemporary jazz language—refined\, rhythmic\, and deeply interactive. Expect fluid grooves\, rich harmony\, and a sound that moves between tradition and modern expression. \n7:30 pm to 8:30 pm (First Set) \n\n9:30 pm to 10:30 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine. \nFeaturing: \n\n\nAlex Kautz —  Drums \n\n\nEdward Perez — Bass \n\n\nMarcio Philomena —  Guitar\, Arrangements & Compositions \n\n\nAbout Marcio Philomena Trio: \nThe Marcio Philomena Trio brings together a group of internationally acclaimed musicians exploring the intersection of Brazilian music and contemporary jazz. Led by Brazilian guitarist and composer Marcio Philomena\, the ensemble creates a dynamic and evolving sound rooted in rhythm\, harmonic sophistication\, and deep musical interaction. \nDrawing from diverse cultural influences and the energy of the New York jazz scene\, the quartet moves fluidly between tradition and modern expression. Their performances emphasize collective improvisation\, subtle interplay\, and a refined approach to groove and form\, offering a contemporary perspective on Brazilian jazz. \nAbout Marcio Philomena: \nMarcio Philomena is a Brazilian guitarist whose work moves fluidly between jazz and global music traditions. Born in Porto Alegre\, he began playing guitar at age 13 and quickly developed a deep connection to jazz after discovering the music of Pat Martino. This early inspiration led him to pursue formal studies at Berklee College of Music\, where he studied with renowned guitarist and educator Mick Goodrick. \nPhilomena’s musical voice is shaped by a wide range of influences\, including Keith Jarrett and George Benson\, while extending beyond traditional jazz boundaries. His work reflects a strong interest in bridging genres\, often reinterpreting contemporary music through a jazz lens and exploring connections between improvisation\, harmony\, and global sounds. \nHe gained international recognition as a semi-finalist in the Montreux Jazz Festival Electric Guitar Competition\, one of the most prestigious platforms for emerging guitarists worldwide. His journey to that stage reflects persistence and dedication\, having applied multiple times before earning a scholarship to Berklee. \nAs an improviser\, Philomena brings a refined harmonic approach\, incorporating advanced concepts such as altered scales and tension–resolution frameworks within jazz. His playing balances technical depth with expressive clarity\, always prioritizing musical connection and artistic authenticity.

The performance draws from his years of travel\, study\, and collaboration in Colombia — including time with the late maestro Diego Obregón — and his continued work as a composer in New York City. \nOver the past four years\, Dan’s voice has evolved through a blend of jazz harmony\, Afro-Colombian rhythm\, and the spirit of the American Songbook\, filtered through his California roots. The result is a bold set of original compositions and rich arrangements shaped by lived experience across cultures. \nA key part of this journey is Dan’s collaboration with Colombian vocalist Xiomara Torres\, whose voice and deep ties to Pacific Coast tradition bring this music to life with authenticity and soul. \nYou will hear airs like currulao\, aguabajo\, juga\, and abozao\, paired with intricate horn arrangements and interpreted by some of New York’s finest jazz musicians. \nThis project reflects the multicultural energy of New York—where folklore\, improvisation\, and innovation coexist—and presents Afro-Colombian music in a new\, elevated form shaped by Dan’s singular vision. \nAbout Dan Neville: \nDan Neville is an award-winning vibraphonist\, composer\, and arranger based in NYC and a 2025 recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship for Music Composition. \nWinner of the 2025 Springfest Vibraphone Competition\, Dan has performed in Europe\, South America\, and across the U.S.\, including the SFJAZZ Center and NBC’s Today Show. \nOriginally from Sonoma\, California\, he began on guitar\, later embracing the vibraphone. In San Francisco\, he collaborated with figures like John Santos and Anthony Blea\, while studying Afro-Cuban music and composition. \nHe earned his B.A. in Jazz Studies at California Jazz Conservatory\, touring Europe with the school’s top ensemble. His debut album Tenerife (2017) featured top Bay Area musicians and was celebrated for its refined Afro-Latin jazz. \nIn 2020\, Dan spent a year in Cali\, Colombia\, studying with Diego Obregón and recording with musicians from the Pacific Coast. His time there led to performances at Utopía and Tamborimba festivals\, and his feature in the documentary Viaje de La Marimba. \nSince relocating to NYC in 2021\, Dan has studied at William Paterson University\, collaborated with artists like Randy Brecker\, and performed regularly at Terraza 7. \nHe produced and arranged La Voz del Mar (2022) by Xiomara Torres\, which reached #1 on RMR’s Latin Jazz chart and was praised by DownBeat.

SUMMARY:Pasatono Trio | Traditional Music of the Mixteca\, Oaxaca
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in the musical traditions of the Mixteca\, Pasatono honors the living and the departed through violin\, bajo quinto\, jarana\, and voice—a celebration of memory\, community\, and renewal. \n7:00 pm to 8:00 (First Set) \n9:00 pm to 10:00 (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover Charge for Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nPatricia García – Violin \n\n\nEdgar Serralde  – Jarana\, Vocals \n\n\nRubén Luengas – Bajo Quinto\, Vocals \n\n\nAbout Pasatono Trio: \nPasatono has dedicated its work to researching\, performing\, composing\, and promoting the musical traditions of the Mixtec culture. Through many years of exploration across Guerrero\, Puebla\, Oaxaca\, and the transnational Mixtec community\, the ensemble has learned directly from “living treasures”—luthiers\, bass players\, violinists\, composers\, and tradition bearers whose knowledge has preserved and shaped this rich musical heritage. \nPasatono is Rubén Luengas (bajo quinto and voice)\, Patricia García (violin)\, and Edgar Serralde (jarana and voice). \nPasatono’s musical journey has taken the sounds of the violin\, bajo quinto\, and jarana from Mixtec communities to major cultural institutions and stages throughout the United States and Mexico. The ensemble has performed at Lincoln Center in New York\, the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C.\, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles\, the Bard Music Festival\, the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston\, El Museo del Barrio in New York\, Terraza 7 in Queens\, Barbès in Brooklyn\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian\, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Stanford University\, the University of Oregon\, and\, most recently\, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival\, among many others. \nYet Pasatono’s music remains deeply rooted in the communities from which it comes—from Mexico City and the plazas of Oaxaca to fandangos in places such as El Jicaral\, Coicoyán de las Flores\, and Yucuquimi de Ocampo. \nPasatono resists leaving behind the sounds with which their grandparents forged their communities: the music of fandangos and celebrations\, the instruments that accompanied their dead\, and the songs with which they grew up. As contemporary Mixtecos\, they remain guided by a simple conviction: their origin is their destiny.
