SUMMARY:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet — Contemporary Tango
DESCRIPTION:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet opens the evening with contemporary tango led by Latin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo\, blending Argentine tradition with modern energy\, lyrical depth\, and expressive improvisation. \n7:00 pm to 8:00 pm (First Set) \n9:00 pm to 10:00 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover charge Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nNicolás Danielson – violin \n\n\nRodrigo Ávalos – bandoneón \n\n\nMartha Kato – piano \n\n\nPedro Giraudo – bass \n\n\nAbout Pedro Giraudo: \nLatin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo is one of the most compelling voices in contemporary tango. A native of Argentina and long based in New York\, Giraudo has become an active cultural ambassador of tango\, expanding its language while honoring its deep tradition. \nAfter two decades performing with some of the most important interpreters of tango\, he debuted his own Tango Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing in 2015\, establishing himself as a leading figure in the global tango scene. His 2018 album Vigor Tanguero won the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Tango Album. In 2014\, he recorded bass on Rubén Blades’ Tangos\, which won both a Grammy and a Latin Grammy. \nGiraudo has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists including Pablo Ziegler\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Branford Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, Regina Carter\, Miguel Zenón\, and William Cepeda\, among many others. He has performed at major venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Blue Note (USA & Japan)\, Birdland\, and London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. \nAs a composer and arranger\, Giraudo bridges Argentine tango\, classical forms\, and jazz improvisation with striking orchestral depth. He has conducted the WDR Big Band and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra\, and has been commissioned by major cultural institutions to create new works celebrating Argentine and Afro-Argentine heritage. \nHis work reflects both mastery of tradition and fearless contemporary exploration. \nAbout Pedro Giraudo Quartet: \nThe Pedro Giraudo Quartet represents the evolution of tango in its most intimate and dynamic form. Drawing from the traditional orquesta típica\, the transformative language of Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo\, and contemporary compositional approaches\, the quartet offers a sound that is both rooted and forward-looking. \nThrough lush harmonies\, intricate counterpoint\, and passionate improvisation\, the ensemble reimagines tango as a living\, breathing art form. Giraudo’s compositions and arrangements create a dialogue between Argentine tradition and modern jazz sensibilities\, preserving the emotional depth and rhythmic intensity of tango while expanding its expressive possibilities. \nThe quartet’s performances balance refinement and fire\, honoring the past while embracing the future of tango on the international stage.

SUMMARY:Festejation – Peruvian Night Celebration
DESCRIPTION:In the intersection of sunlit dunes and the Pacific’s surf\, the Afro-Peruvian musical tradition emerged. “Festejation” sees NY artists from across the Americas honor this style. Led by Edward Pérez\, they blend high art with a laid-back dance vibe\, perfect with a pisco sour. \n8:00 pm to 9: 00pm (First Set) \n10:00 pm to 11: 00pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover charge for Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nMaria Raquel / Vocals \n\n\nEric Kurimski / Guitar \n\n\nJuan Felipe Mayorga / Drums \n\n\nDylan Blanchard / Congas \n\n\nFelipe Fournier / Bongó\, campana\, quijada \n\n\nEdward Pérez / Bass and arrangements. \n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/GThLhdudLy4 \n Where the sun-drenched dunes of a vast desert collide with the salty surf of the Pacific\, the Afro-Peruvian musical tradition was born. The churning of those waves can be heard in the percussion and the spice of the ceviche from those waters can be felt in the vocals of festejo\, the Afro-Peruvian music and dance style dedicated to celebration. In Festejation\, a crack crew of New York regulars hailing from countries up and down the American continent pay homage to this tradition\, each adding their accented voice and a dose of urban chic. Blending the talents of the group\, director Edward Pérez (co-director of the Grammy-nominated Terraza Big Band and Silkroad artist) crafts novel arrangements in which festejo is treated at once as high art and also as a comfortable-as-denim dance style that anyone can get rowdy to with a pisco sour in hand.

As a go-to first call saxophonist\, his name adorns several essential recordings ranging from the legendary Joey DeFrancesco\, the iconic Van Morrison\, the quintessential Jeff “Tain” Watts\, the tireless Orrin Evans Captain Black Big Band\, the critically acclaimed Kurt Elling\, the breathtaking Veronica Swift\, to numerous other jazz veterans\, and newcomers considered tastemakers of their generation. \nRoberts\, a New York City based Australian immigrant\, is also a prolific leader with sixteen releases to his name. Currently celebrating his latest\, Green Lights(featuring John Patitucci\, Paul Bollenback and Jimmy Macbride)\, Roberts maintains a busy recording and performance schedule with his quartet\, his original project Nu-Jive\, as well as some of the greatest artists of today. \nTroy Roberts continues to be a master of styles and configurations with this eminently accessible\, sonically and rhythmically engaging session\, emitting steam and sumptuous harmonic colors along the way. -Glide Magazine \n‘Nu-Jive: Nations United’ is another outstanding project by the ever-creative composer and saxophonist Troy Roberts. The bandmates’ long-time chemistry undoubtedly accounts for the stability and respect this ensemble creates together. The ten songs offer various configurations for optimum expression for each member as they ebb and flow through the written and improvised sections of the compositions. The result is a jazz session filled with 3D proportions of interacting and layering to create something unique and meaningful that encompasses the jazz of today and beyond. -Steven Miller\, Sound In Review \nRoberts\, though young in age\, certainly has an arsenal of abilities under his belt\, and has the makings and foundation of a lasting great saxophonist. Versatile in style\, with a strong grasp of yesterday and today\, he is a force to be reckoned with no matter the setting. He is more than one to watch\, he is one to follow closely. – JazzTimes Magazine  \nSubstance and style will triumph over pretentiousness and ego every time. Roberts has a resume that will certainly make one sit up and take notice having shared the stage with such luminaries as Nicholas Payton\, Orrin Evans and John Clayton. “Nu–Jive 5” is Roberts fifth release as a leader and is brimming with vitality and that certain pop of originality that separates the “artist” from the “musician. – Critical Jazz
