SUMMARY:Mario Wellmann Trio | "Ecos del Sur" | South American Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of South American jazz with the Mario Wellmann Trio\, led by Chilean guitarist Mario Wellmann. With every note of his guitar\, Mario carries the landscapes and memory of southern Chile into new sonic territory\, uniting cultures and hearts through the universal language of jazz. \n7:00 PM to 8:00 PM (First Set) \n9:00 PM to 10:00 PM (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine. \nFeaturing: \n\n\n Mario Wellmann | Guitar \n\n\n Guillermo López | Bass \n\n\n Daniel Dufour | Drums \n\n\nAbout Mario Wellmann Trio | “Ecos del Sur”: \nEcos del Sur (“Echoes of the South”) is a suite of five original compositions named after places in southern Chile\, connected by solo guitar interludes. The music draws on extended harmony\, open form\, and a rhythmic sensibility rooted in South American traditions — lyrical and melodic at its core\, but harmonically adventurous and alive in the moment. For the Terraza 7 show\, the trio will perform the full album alongside standards and other originals\, bringing together the intimacy of the guitar trio format with the depth of music that has been years in the making. \nAbout Mario Wellmann: \nMario Wellmann is a Chilean jazz guitarist and composer based in New York City and Austin\, Texas. A PhD Fellow in Music Theory at Columbia University and a graduate of the jazz program at the University of North Texas\, he has performed across the Americas and Europe at venues including The Django and Jazz Forum Arts in New York\, the Elkhart Jazz Festival\, Sala Master at Radio Universidad de Chile\, and Thelonious Lugar de Jazz in Santiago. He received two DownBeat Student Music Awards in 2022\, among the most competitive honors in jazz education. \nIn 2026\, Wellmann was awarded the Fondo de la Música\, Chile’s equivalent of the National Endowment for the Arts\, to record his debut album as a leader\, Ecos del Sur\, at Greyfade Studio in New York City with Grammy-winning engineer Joseph Branciforte\, whose credits include Julian Lage\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, and Ben Monder. The album takes its name from the landscapes of Chile’s central south: five compositions named after cities and towns in the region\, connected by solo guitar interludes inspired by the roads that wind through its forests\, music born from the memory of long car rides and the particular silence of that part of the world. This show at Terraza 7 is part of a pre-recording tour ahead of the August studio sessions\, presented with the support of the Chilean Consulate General in New York and the Chilean Embassy in Washington\, D.C..

SUMMARY:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet — Contemporary Tango
DESCRIPTION:The Pedro Giraudo Quartet opens the evening with contemporary tango led by Latin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo\, blending Argentine tradition with modern energy\, lyrical depth\, and expressive improvisation. \n7:00 pm to 8:00 pm (First Set) \n9:00 pm to 10:00 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover charge Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nNicolás Danielson – violin \n\n\nRodrigo Ávalos – bandoneón \n\n\nMartha Kato – piano \n\n\nPedro Giraudo – bass \n\n\nAbout Pedro Giraudo: \nLatin GRAMMY Award–winning bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo is one of the most compelling voices in contemporary tango. A native of Argentina and long based in New York\, Giraudo has become an active cultural ambassador of tango\, expanding its language while honoring its deep tradition. \nAfter two decades performing with some of the most important interpreters of tango\, he debuted his own Tango Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing in 2015\, establishing himself as a leading figure in the global tango scene. His 2018 album Vigor Tanguero won the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Tango Album. In 2014\, he recorded bass on Rubén Blades’ Tangos\, which won both a Grammy and a Latin Grammy. \nGiraudo has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists including Pablo Ziegler\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Branford Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, Regina Carter\, Miguel Zenón\, and William Cepeda\, among many others. He has performed at major venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Blue Note (USA & Japan)\, Birdland\, and London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. \nAs a composer and arranger\, Giraudo bridges Argentine tango\, classical forms\, and jazz improvisation with striking orchestral depth. He has conducted the WDR Big Band and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra\, and has been commissioned by major cultural institutions to create new works celebrating Argentine and Afro-Argentine heritage. \nHis work reflects both mastery of tradition and fearless contemporary exploration. \nAbout Pedro Giraudo Quartet: \nThe Pedro Giraudo Quartet represents the evolution of tango in its most intimate and dynamic form. Drawing from the traditional orquesta típica\, the transformative language of Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo\, and contemporary compositional approaches\, the quartet offers a sound that is both rooted and forward-looking. \nThrough lush harmonies\, intricate counterpoint\, and passionate improvisation\, the ensemble reimagines tango as a living\, breathing art form. Giraudo’s compositions and arrangements create a dialogue between Argentine tradition and modern jazz sensibilities\, preserving the emotional depth and rhythmic intensity of tango while expanding its expressive possibilities. \nThe quartet’s performances balance refinement and fire\, honoring the past while embracing the future of tango on the international stage.

SUMMARY:NYC Book Club with TOMDNYC: Lowlife by Lucy Sante
DESCRIPTION:Join Tom Delgado of TOMDNYC discussing Lowlife by Lucy Sante for August’s NYC Book Club pick! \nBook is not required to join the discussion! \nThis is not the familiar saga of mansions\, avenues\, and robber barons\, but the messy\, turbulent\, often murderous story of the city’s slums; the teeming streets–scene of innumerable cons and crimes whose cramped and overcrowded housing is still a prominent feature of the cityscape. \nLow Life voyages through Manhattan from four different directions. Part One examines the actual topography of Manhattan from 1840 to 1919; Part Two\, the era’s opportunities for vice and entertainment–theaters and saloons\, opium and cocaine dens\, gambling and prostitution; Part Three investigates the forces of law and order which did and didn’t work to contain the illegalities; Part Four counterposes the city’s tides of revolt and idealism against the city as it actually was. \nLow Life provides an arresting and entertaining view of what New York was actually like in its salad days. But it’s more than simply a book about New York. It’s one of the most provocative books about urban life ever written–an evocation of the mythology of the quintessential modern metropolis\, which has much to say not only about New York’s past but about the present and future of all cities.
