SUMMARY:SHUSMO | Arabic Latin Funk
DESCRIPTION:Tonight\, SHUSMO brings Arab maqam into a vibrant encounter with jazz improvisation\, funk grooves\, Latin rhythms\, and contemporary experimentation. Led by Palestinian composer and buzuq player Tareq Abboushi\, the band creates a sound that is intricate\, rhythmically charged\, and unmistakably its own. \n7:00 PM to 8 PM (First Set) \n9:00 PM to 10 PM (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nLefteris Bournias — Clarinet \n\n\nHector Morales — Drums & percussion \n\n\nJohn Murchison — Bass \n\n\nZafer Tawil — Percussion \n\n\nTareq Abboushi — Buzuq\, vocals\, electronics\, compositions \n\n\nAbout SHUSMO: \nSHUSMO is a genre-defying ensemble founded and led by Palestinian composer and buzuq player Tareq Abboushi. Rooted in Arab music and the modal language of maqam\, the band creates an adventurous contemporary sound in which intricate Middle Eastern melodies and rhythms meet jazz improvisation\, funk grooves\, Latin percussion\, rock\, and elements of Western classical music. \nAt the center of SHUSMO’s sound is the buzuq\, whose microtonal language interacts with clarinet\, bass\, drums\, and percussion through arrangements shaped by rhythmic complexity\, counterpoint\, and improvisation. Rather than simply placing Arab melodies over Western harmony\, SHUSMO brings distinct melodic\, rhythmic\, and improvisational traditions into a shared musical language. \nThe result is sophisticated yet visceral—music deeply connected to Palestinian and Arab traditions while remaining open to groove\, experimentation\, and unexpected musical encounters. Even the name SHUSMO—roughly “whatchamacallit” in Arabic—captures the ensemble’s refusal to fit neatly into a single category. \nAbout Tareq Abboushi: \nTareq Abboushi is a Palestinian composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, bandleader\, and educator whose career spans performance\, composition\, recording\, and music education. \nAfter graduating with honors from William Paterson University with a degree in Jazz Piano Performance\, Abboushi turned to the buzuq as a vehicle for exploring and expanding his musical language. He has since collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists including Simon Shaheen\, Omar Farouk Tekbilek\, Souad Massi\, Abeer Nehme\, Lotfi Bouchnak\, Amir ElSaffar\, and Grammy Award–winner Dan Zanes. \nHis work as a composer extends across concert music\, electronic music\, film scoring\, dance\, radio\, television\, and commissioned soundscapes for visual-art projects. His discography includes two albums with SHUSMO\, five with Amir ElSaffar\, and numerous other collaborations\, including three recordings with Dan Zanes. His album Henna reached No. 1 on the Transglobal World Music Chart in August 2021. \nAbboushi is also an experienced international educator. His teaching encompasses Arabic maqam and Western music theory\, buzuq\, piano\, ensemble performance\, and Arab music. He has taught and lectured at institutions including Columbia University\, The Juilliard School\, Birzeit University\, Agder University\, the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music\, and the Museum of the City of New York. \nHis awards and grants include support from the Tampere Culture and Leisure Committee and MES\, as well as second place in the composition category of the Palestinian National Music Competition. He is currently based in Finland.

Led entirely by women musicians\, the ensemble celebrates Cali’s identity as a world capital of salsa while expanding the genre through original arrangements and distinctive instrumentation. \nTheir sound combines the driving energy of traditional salsa percussion with trombones\, violins\, flute\, vibraphone\, piano\, and bass\, creating a rich orchestral palette that moves between tradition and innovation. Their repertoire explores the essential rhythms of salsa while paying tribute to the great women who have shaped the genre. \nSon Mujeres has been recognized by Billboard as one of ten representative salsa orchestras from Colombia and the only all-women ensemble among those selected in 2023. The orchestra won Cali’s Festival de Orquestas de la Ruta de la Salsa in 2025 and has collaborated onstage with renowned Cuban-American violinist Alfredo de la Fe. \nTheir recording projects include Homenaje a los Clásicos de la Salsa\, produced with support from Colombia’s Ministry of Culture\, and Salsa en Cuerpo de Mujer\, created through an award from the Yuri Buenaventura Foundation and CREASONIDOS. \nWith a commanding ensemble sound and a distinctly female artistic identity\, Son Mujeres represents a new generation of Cali salsa—rooted in its history\, driven by women\, and created for the contemporary international stage.

SUMMARY:Queens Hispanic Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:Update: This parade was postponed from September 27 due to the nor’easter and merged into the Queens Dominican Day Parade on Sunday\, October 4. \nA vibrant celebration of Hispanic heritage and culture featuring colorful floats\, traditional dance performances\, live music\, community groups\, and local leaders. \n37th Avenue – 69th Street to 89th Street \nAmericans celebrate their Hispanic roots in the 21 Spanish-speaking countries with marchers showing Latin music\, dance\, traditional costumes\, floats\, food\, and more.\nTheme: Unidos Somos Más (United We Are More)\n37th Avenue\nFrom 69th to 86th St\nJackson Heights\, Queens\nSun\, October 4 2026 | 12pm \nOriginally scheduled for Sun\, September 27\, 2026\, the parade has been moved to Sunday\, October 4\, 2026 because of the big storm hitting NYC this weekend. What we’re doing is joining the Queens Dominican Parade scheduled on that day. That’s great because Dominicans have long believed in the Pan-Latin concept of us as one people. \nNearly 100 cultural\, civic\, and business groups are expected to march. \nQueens Hispanic Parade 2026 Court: \nQueen: Genesis Vaca\nPrincess: Veis Ríos\nInternational Ambassador: Carina Gómez\nReina de Reinas: Gina Vásquez\nBeautiful Forever: Angie Florales\nCongratulations to the 2026 court. You represent us all proudly. \nA plaque was presented to the family of María Bueso\, a founding member of the Queens Hispanic Parade and of the Fundación Siempre Colombia\, at the parade’s gala at Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. \nThis year’s theme is right on. Together we are strong. It’s worth noting that our country\, the United States of America\, has the world’s second-largest Spanish speaking population\, after Mexico. Somos muy orgulloso para mantener la idioma de nuestros padres. It even makes us better Americans. \nAnd it’s really important this year for American citizens to vote for members of Congress who represent all of us. Latinos have more political power than ever. Two years ago\, many of us voted for a strongman character who hates Latinos and all people of color. It’s time to take our country back by voting because we are Americans too.
