SUMMARY:La Otra Embajada\, de Cristina Espinel - Book Presentation – Q&A with the Author
DESCRIPTION:An intimate evening of literature and dialogue featuring a book presentation and conversation with the author\, exploring memory\, exile\, and decades of Colombian human rights advocacy through personal testimony and historical reflection.\nRSVP \nModerated by: Mario Murillo \nSinopsis — La otra Embajada: \nLa otra Embajada es una memoria y testimonio que abarca 45 años de lucha por los derechos humanos colombianos desde el exterior. \nEnglish Version: \nSynopsis — La otra Embajada: \nA memoir and testimony spanning 45 years of advocacy for Colombian human rights from abroad\, La otra Embajada reconstructs—through interviews\, archival documents\, and personal memory—the emergence and evolution of solidarity committees formed across the United States and Canada since the late 1960s. \nThe book traces how these networks created vital international pathways for Colombian human rights defenders\, social leaders\, and peacebuilders. At its center is Espinel’s home in Washington\, known as “The Other Embassy\,” which for decades functioned as a living space of refuge\, political exchange\, and collective action. \nExtending from the Security Statute under Turbay Ayala to the 2016 Peace Accords\, this work is both historical record and moral gesture—an effort to preserve a collective memory that remains an urgent and unfinished debt to Colombia. \nAbout Cristina Espinel: \nCristina Espinel was born into a family displaced by political violence from Choachí\, Cundinamarca\, and grew up in Bogotá. Her personal history has deeply shaped her path as a human rights defender and social worker. \nShe is a co-founder of the Colombia Human Rights Committee in Washington\, an organization that since 1981 has worked on a voluntary basis to inform and educate legislators\, media\, and civil society about the human rights situation in Colombia\, and to support communities seeking change through nonviolent means. Over four decades\, Cristina has played a key role in placing Colombia on the agenda of other international human rights organizations. \nShe was an active advocate for the 2016 Peace Agreement and participated in the Truth Commission as part of the United States node\, where she interviewed victims in exile whose testimonies became part of the report La Colombia fuera de Colombia (Colombia Outside of Colombia). \nAcademically\, she began her sociology studies at Universidad Cooperativa INDESCO in Bogotá and completed them at Beacon College of Boston (Washington\, D.C. campus). She later earned a master’s degree from George Washington University and a specialization in play therapy. This training led her to work with children ages 3 to 12 from countries in conflict and domestic violence situations\, weaving together political commitment and deeply human care in her practice.

SUMMARY:The New Bojaira - Flamenco Jazz
DESCRIPTION:The New Bojaira crafts a vibrant fusion of Andalusian Flamenco and New York Jazz\, delivering a rousing blend of rhythmic soul and spirited dance. \n7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. (First Set)\n9:30 pm to 10:30 pm. (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover Charge Mezzanine \nFeaturing:\nJesús Hernádez / Piano.\nElisabet Torras / Bailaora\nAlfonso Cid / Vocals and flute.\nTim Ferguson / Double bass.\nMark Holen / Drums.\nPeter Brainin / Saxophones and flute. \nAbout The New Bojaira: \nThe fusion between Jazz and Flamenco is one of the most exciting musical and artistic expressions emerging in the world today. In the case of The New Bojaira\, the music flows like the water in the Bojaira\, the irrigation channel built by the Arabs in Granada\, whose name this band has taken as its own. An original and versatile fusion\, blending the depth and intensity of both jazz and flamenco. \nThe core quartet is a combination of two Spanish musicians from the home of flamenco\, Andalusia\, pianist Jesús Hernández and singer/flute player Alfonso Cid; and two long time veterans of the New York jazz scene\, bassist Tim Ferguson and drummer Mark Holen. \nThe group also performs in expanded quintet or sextet form with flamenco dancers who have included Elisabet Torras\, María De Los Angeles\, Auxi Fernández and Marina Elana and horn players such as Peter Brainin\, Joel Frahm and Jorge Pardo. \nThe repertoire of The New Bojaira is rooted in the styles and rhythms of flamenco. A jazz approach allows the musicians of the band to open improvisational doors. In addition to original compositions by Hernández and the band\, the group draws on a varied repertoire\, including flamenco arrangements of jazz standards such as “Laura” and Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight”. \nSince its inception in December of 2013 The New Bojaira has appeared in many important venues in New York City and the surrounding area including Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Joe’s Pub\, Drom\, and the legendary Deer Head Inn\, as well as performing extensively at festivals\, theatres and clubs in Europe including Festival del Lago (Atarfe\, Granada)\, Festival Jazz Chinchilla (Albacete)\, Festival Jazz Xábia (Alicante)\, Auditorio Box Sevilla (Seville)\, Sala Clamores (Madrid)\, Colegio de España at le Cité Universitaire (Paris)\, Club Bab-ilo (Paris).
