SUMMARY:Queens NY Practical Philosophy Meetup
DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?\nPractical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic\, practice communicating\, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required!\nPractical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all\, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic\, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.\nThe goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking\, Communication\, and Community \nHOW DOES IT WORK?\nEach week\, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared\, generally in the Whatsapp group\, along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.\nWhen groups get bigger than 7-8 people\, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. \nGeneral Meeting Agenda\nEach Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: \n\n18:00-18:15 – People arrive and chat\, get to know each other before the official start.\n18:15-18:25 – Meeting introduction\, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week\, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.\n18:25-19:30 – Break into small groups – introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic\, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed\, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.\n19:30-19:45 – Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic – each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.\n19:45 – The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment\, so we often stick around\, chat\, and get to know each other.\n\nPRICING?\nPractical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café\, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary\, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you’d like to support\, you can donate here!\n(Practical Philosophy is a registered Canadian charity) \nWHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY\n“I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” – Ekam\n“I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” – Daniel \nFAQ \n\nDo I need to study or read anything to attend?\n\nNo preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic\, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share\, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it. \n\nIs there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?\n\nThe goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions\, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this\, we want to hear from every realm of thought\, and don’t study a particular school. \n\nIs it mostly men that attend?\n\nSurprisingly\, no! Although often\, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys\, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders\, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms. \n\nCan I come alone?\n\nOf course you can\, we encourage it 🙂 \n\nCan I be late?\n\nPlease don’t be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out\, but after that if you arrive too late\, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. \n\nWhere do you meet?\n\nThe location is posted in Meetup and our Whatsapp group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club\, you can see our chapters on our website. \nPOLICY\nTo respect our members privacy\, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment. \nPRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY CLUB – Philosophy\, everywhere. \nWe started in Practical Philosophy back in 2021 and there are now 60+ chapters in 28+ countries\, including Canada\, Spain\, Japan\, Mexico and many more!\n***\nJoin our New York Whatsapp \nFollow us on Instagram \nOur website

SUMMARY:BYOB: Bring Your Own Book!
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the launch of Jia Pu 家譜 cookbook with a book reading and sharing event at World’s Borough Bookshop!\n\n\nNew York\, we’re coming to you. 🏮 \nDo you believe in the power of food and storytelling?\nAre you curious about knowing the stories that shape the people around you? \nJoin us for a BYOB: Bring Your Own Book event at World’s Borough Bookshop in celebration of AANHPI Month and the launch of Jia Pu 家譜: Cooking Our Way Home; Recipes\, Art\, & Stories from the Asian American South.  \nThe evening will include readings from our cookbook\, book signing\, snacks\, drinks\, music\, and a sharing circle. Bring a book that represents who you are\, how you got here\, or who you are becoming. \nJia Pu 家譜 began as a desire to document our potluck conversations with the Memphis Asian American community and has since grown into something we never could have imagined: an expanding archive for celebration\, storytelling\, and remembrance. \nCome for a taste of Memphis and stay for the flavors of home! \nAbout MengCheng 梦城团 Collective \nMengCheng 梦城团 Collective (pronounced “muh-ng chuh-ng”) is an invitation into intergenerational dialogue\, communal healing\, and empowerment by sharing the Asian American experience of living in the Mid-South. MengCheng 梦城 “City of Dreams” is inspired by the Chinese phonetic name for Memphis\, or 孟菲斯 mèngfēisī. As artists and makers who grew up in Memphis\, Thandi Cai\, LiLi Nacht\, Yidan Zeng and the late Neena Wang formed this collective to challenge the way our cultural histories have been collected\, disseminated\, or made invisible. Through an art-making process centered around food\, ritual\, and gathering\, they create spaces to involve the Southern Asian American community in their own archive making\, healing\, and resource building. We aim to create transformative processes that allow the Asian American community to not only see ourselves in the history and future of the Mid-South\, but also to claim our agency in enacting change in the region. SUMMARY:Julian Miltenberger Quartet— Jazz
DESCRIPTION:An evening of contemporary jazz led by drummer and composer Julian Miltenberger\, where Afro-Caribbean rhythms\, deep groove\, and modern improvisation converge in a dynamic\, richly textured quartet sound. \n7:30 pm to 8:30 pm (First Set) \n9:30 pm to 10:30 pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover charge Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nManuel Valera | Piano \n\n\nOr Bareket | Bass \n\n\nSalim Charvet | Saxophone \n\n\nJulian Miltenberger | Drums\, Composition & Direction \n\n\nAbout Julian Miltenberger: \nJulian Miltenberger is a drummer\, composer\, and rhythmic architect from Philadelphia\, PA\, now based in Brooklyn\, NYC. A product of the Harvard/Berklee dual degree program\, he studied under the mentorship of master saxophonist and bandleader Yosvany Terry\, whose influence shaped Julian’s deep commitment to the African diaspora as a living musical force. That commitment took him beyond the classroom — to Cuba and West Africa — where he conducted firsthand research into the folkloric percussion traditions that now form the bedrock of his artistic voice. \nJulian’s work is rooted in reverence and propelled by curiosity. He approaches the drum set as a vessel for the full breadth of Afro-Caribbean rhythm\, translating the vocabulary of traditional percussion into a modern framework that embraces collective improvisation\, metric complexity\, and expansive sonic texture. The result is music that honors its sources without being bound by them — a mosaic where ancient groove meets contemporary harmonic and structural thinking. \nFor this project\, Julian is joined by three exceptional voices: Salim Charvet on saxophone\, Gabriel Chakarji on piano\, and Or Bareket on bass. \nAs a sideman\, Julian has performed alongside some of the most celebrated names in jazz and Latin music\, including Yosvany Terry\, Edmar Castaneda\, Vijay Iyer\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Lucía\, Godwin Louis\, Diego Urcola\, Darren Barrett\, Manuel Valera\, Axel Tosca\, Samuel Torres\, Wayne Tucker\, and Ricky Rodriguez. He is a regular member of the Birdland Latin Jazz Orchestra\, and has appeared with the Luxembourg Philharmonic and the Boston Pops.

SUMMARY:Festejation – Peruvian Night Celebration
DESCRIPTION:In the intersection of sunlit dunes and the Pacific’s surf\, the Afro-Peruvian musical tradition emerged. “Festejation” sees NY artists from across the Americas honor this style. Led by Edward Pérez\, they blend high art with a laid-back dance vibe\, perfect with a pisco sour \n9:00 pm to 10: 00pm (First Set) \n11:00 pm to 11: 55pm (Second Set) \nAdmission: $20 Cover charge for Mezzanine \nFeaturing: \n\n\nMaria Raquel / Vocals \n\n\nEric Kurimski / Guitar \n\n\nJuan Felipe Mayorga / Drums \n\n\nDylan Blanchard / Congas \n\n\nFelipe Fournier / Bongó\, campana\, quijada \n\n\nEdward Pérez / Bass and arrangements. \n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/GThLhdudLy4 \n Where the sun-drenched dunes of a vast desert collide with the salty surf of the Pacific\, the Afro-Peruvian musical tradition was born. The churning of those waves can be heard in the percussion and the spice of the ceviche from those waters can be felt in the vocals of festejo\, the Afro-Peruvian music and dance style dedicated to celebration. In Festejation\, a crack crew of New York regulars hailing from countries up and down the American continent pay homage to this tradition\, each adding their accented voice and a dose of urban chic. Blending the talents of the group\, director Edward Pérez (co-director of the Grammy-nominated Terraza Big Band and Silkroad artist) crafts novel arrangements in which festejo is treated at once as high art and also as a comfortable-as-denim dance style that anyone can get rowdy to with a pisco sour in hand.
