SUMMARY:Cristina Candela\, Barbara Martinez & Raphael Brunne -Flamenco
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of flamenco where Cristina’s expressive dance meets the warm voice of Barbara Martinez. With guitarist Raphael Brunne and a solid group of accompanying musicians\, they bring a thoughtful and intimate approach to flamenco in a night of rhythm\, song\, and dance. \n7:30 pm to 8:30 pm(First Set) \n9:30 pm to 10:30 pm(Second Set) \nAdmission: $20: Cover at Mezzanine. \nFeaturing: \n\n\nCristina Candela / Bailaora \n\n\nBarbara Martinez / Cantaora \n\n\nRaphael Brunne / Guitar \n\n\nAbout Cristina Candela: \nCristina Candela has been dedicated to flamenco since 2007\, performing in tablaos such as El Patio Andaluz in Barcelona and touring internationally in Malaysia and Singapore with Chalachi. She has collaborated with companies like María Carrasco Cía and Apuchelando Cía\, taking on roles as dancer\, choreographer\, and producer. \nHer artistic curiosity has led her into fusion projects\, notably with Anlage Cía in Granada\, and into educational initiatives such as Voices of Tomorrow under the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation\, where she served as a cultural ambassador. \nCristina’s work also bridges cinema and performance — she has acted\, danced\, and participated in the production of short and independent films. Deeply engaged with both the stage and its creative processes\, she sees dance as a language for expressing her vision of the world. As she recalls the words of Pina Bausch\, “Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.” \nAbout Barbara Martinez: \nBárbara Martínez is a flamenco singer\, dancer\, songwriter\, and interdisciplinary artist whose career began at age 11 with The Children’s Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera. She is one of the few flamenco artists in the United States who performs regularly both as singer and dancer with leading flamenco companies\, including Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana\, A Palo Seco\, Pasión y Arte\, and EntreFlamenco. \nHer work bridges flamenco with jazz\, Latin American\, Middle Eastern\, and Sephardic musical traditions. She leads several original projects\, including a Latin jazz/flamenco ensemble that debuted at Carnegie Hall\, the flamenco fusion project ALBA MUSIK with Albert Alabedra\, and Barbarella\, a new body of original songs in English and Spanish. She is also the creator of TrashBata\, a one-woman performance work addressing the environmental crisis through flamenco and theater. \nComing from a celebrated artistic family\, Bárbara is the granddaughter of Argentine tango singer Morenita Rey and grandniece of legendary vocalist Libertad Lamarque. Her work has been featured in the documentary Sobre Las Olas – A Story of Flamenco in the U.S. and the exhibit 100 Years of Flamenco in New York. The New York Times praised her ability to make “something fresh of the Latin style.” \nBárbara holds degrees from Brown University and Berklee College of Music and currently teaches music in New York City. \nAbout Raphael Brunn: \nRaphael Brunn is a flamenco guitarist and composer born on December 19\, 1973\, in Hackensack\, New Jersey\, into a family of performers whose roots span juggling\, dance\, and trapeze. Raised in an environment where performance was a way of life\, he developed an early sensitivity to rhythm\, beginning his musical path on the bass guitar at the age of ten. \nAt fourteen\, Raphael moved to Europe to join his father\, a renowned juggler and acrobat whose work had long incorporated live flamenco music. Through this connection\, Raphael was immersed from an early age in the flamenco world\, gaining exposure to respected artists such as El Manzanita\, El Recortao\, and Pepe Márquez\, among others. \nHis debut as a flamenco guitarist took place during the opening festivities of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona\, marking the beginning of a professional path deeply tied to the tradition. Over the years\, he has performed alongside many of the artists who influenced his development\, including collaborations with El Farruquito and El Torombo in the production Incognito in Frankfurt\, Germany. \nNow based in New York City\, Raphael Brunn continues to perform with a range of flamenco artists while developing his work as a composer. He is currently working on his second album.

SUMMARY:Queens College Choral Society: 85th Annual Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:With the Queens College Orchestra\, Vocal Ensemble and Treble Choir \nJames John\, Director \nDavid Stern – Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass: Cantata for Soprano Solo\, Chorus and Orchestra (World Premiere) \nGabriel Fauré – Requiem \nIn 1839 Walt Whitman taught in a one-room school house that was on the grounds of the present day Queens College campus. David Stern’s new cantata celebrates the universality of Whitman’s words with music that is ethereal\, intimate and profoundly joyful. \nFauré’s Requiem is one of the most beloved works in the choral-orchestral repertory\, beautiful in its grandeur and deeply comforting in its warmth. \nTogether\, these two works offer a heartfelt glimpse into the mysteries of the human soul.

SUMMARY:NYC Book Club: The Gods of New York by Jonathan Mahler
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our May conversation with Tom Delgado: comedian\, tour guide\, and creator of TOMDNYC on YouTube! We’ll be discussing Gods of New York by Jonathan Mahler. A purchase is not necessary to join the discussion! \n\nNew York entered 1986 as a city reborn. Record profits on Wall Street sent waves of money splashing across Manhattan\, bringing a battered city roaring back to life. \nBut it also entered 1986 as a city whose foundation was beginning to crack. Thousands of New Yorkers were sleeping in the streets\, addicted to drugs\, dying of AIDS\, or suffering from mental illnesses. Nearly one-third of the city’s Black and Hispanic residents were living below the federal poverty line. Long-simmering racial tensions threatened to boil over. \nThe events of the next four years would split the city open. Howard Beach. Black Monday. Tawana Brawley. The crack epidemic. The birth of ACT UP. The Central Park jogger. The release of Do the Right Thing. And a cast of outsized characters—Ed Koch\, Donald Trump\, Al Sharpton\, Spike Lee\, Rudy Giuliani\, Larry Kramer—would compete to shape the city’s future while building their own mythologies. \nThe Gods of New York is a kaleidoscopic and deeply immersive portrait of a city whose identity was suddenly up for grabs: Could it be both the great working-class city that lifted up immigrants from around the world and the money-soaked capital of global finance? Could it retain a civic culture—a common idea of what it meant to be a New Yorker—when the rich were building a city of their own and vast swaths of its citizens were losing faith in the systems meant to protect them? New York City was one thing at the dawn of 1986; it would be something very different as 1989 came to a close. This is the story of how that happened.

SUMMARY:Blueprints of the Body Writing Workshop with Matthew Marroquin
DESCRIPTION:This generative poetry workshop series invites participants to explore the complex paths that brought them to the here and now: across geographies\, generations\, and identities. Through reflection\, discussion\, and writing prompts\, each session will guide participants in crafting poems that trace lineage\, transformation\, and personal mythologies. \nBlueprints of the Body explores further into… \nHow did we get our bodies? SUMMARY:Tuvergen Band: Mongolian Folk
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Tuvergen Band and the distinctive musical and cultural traditions of Mongolia\, with its deep connection to the natural world. Come and hear for yourself how the country’s traditional music reflects the sounds of wind\, water\, animals\, and the expansive grasslands of the steppe. At the heart of this tradition is throat singing (khöömii)\, a mesmerizing vocal technique in which a single voice produces multiple tones at once\, echoing the layered harmonies of the surrounding environment. \nTuvergen Band features Tamir Hargana\, an award-winning throat singer and multi-instrumentalist; Naizal Hargana\, a master of the morin khuur who was principal and leading soloist of the Inner Mongolian Youth Choir’s Morin Khuur Ensemble and is known for bridging Mongolian and Western styles; and Brent Roman\, an ethnomusicologist and former Cirque du Soleil performer whose global drum kit and didgeridoo add rich texture to the group’s “modern nomadic music”. \nThroughout the program\, audiences will have the chance to try basic vocal techniques and rhythm exercises. Flushing Town Hall teaching artist Ling Tang will also join the band\, improvising with their music while demonstrating essential Inner Mongolian dance movements such as horse-riding steps and the use of unique props like chopsticks and wine cups. Together\, they will lead everyone in a lively grassland-inspired music and dance finale\, a joyful dance party. This event was originally offered as part of FTH’s 2026 Lunar New Year programming.

SUMMARY:Queens NY Practical Philosophy Meetup
DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?\nPractical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic\, practice communicating\, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required!\nPractical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all\, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic\, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.\nThe goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking\, Communication\, and Community \nHOW DOES IT WORK?\nEach week\, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared\, generally in the Whatsapp group\, along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.\nWhen groups get bigger than 7-8 people\, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. \nGeneral Meeting Agenda\nEach Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: \n\n18:00-18:15 – People arrive and chat\, get to know each other before the official start.\n18:15-18:25 – Meeting introduction\, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week\, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.\n18:25-19:30 – Break into small groups – introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic\, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed\, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.\n19:30-19:45 – Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic – each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.\n19:45 – The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment\, so we often stick around\, chat\, and get to know each other.\n\nPRICING?\nPractical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café\, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary\, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you’d like to support\, you can donate here!\n(Practical Philosophy is a registered Canadian charity) \nWHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY\n“I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” – Ekam\n“I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” – Daniel \nFAQ \n\nDo I need to study or read anything to attend?\n\nNo preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic\, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share\, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it. \n\nIs there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?\n\nThe goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions\, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this\, we want to hear from every realm of thought\, and don’t study a particular school. \n\nIs it mostly men that attend?\n\nSurprisingly\, no! Although often\, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys\, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders\, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms. \n\nCan I come alone?\n\nOf course you can\, we encourage it 🙂 \n\nCan I be late?\n\nPlease don’t be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out\, but after that if you arrive too late\, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. \n\nWhere do you meet?\n\nThe location is posted in Meetup and our Whatsapp group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club\, you can see our chapters on our website. \nPOLICY\nTo respect our members privacy\, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment. \nPRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY CLUB – Philosophy\, everywhere. \nWe started in Practical Philosophy back in 2021 and there are now 60+ chapters in 28+ countries\, including Canada\, Spain\, Japan\, Mexico and many more!\n***\nJoin our New York Whatsapp \nFollow us on Instagram \nOur website
