Hey neighbor, What a week to be in Jackson Heights. Queens Pride brought music, flags, dancing, and thousands of people to 37th Avenue on Sunday. The mayor stopped by too, proving that even City Hall knows where the party is. Now the neighborhood is trading rainbow flags for orange and blue. The Knicks lead the NBA Finals 2-1 and are just two wins from the championship with games 4 and 5 on Wednesday and Saturday. It feels especially fitting that star player Jalen Brunson is already watching over us from the mural at Northern Boulevard and 84th Street, which he personally helped unveil in 2023.
He is not our only basketball hero. Jackson Heights resident Craig Campanella spends his weekends carrying a ladder around Queens and replacing missing nets on park hoops. He says hoops without nets make him sad. Honestly, we understand. And just when you thought we had reached our sports limit, the World Cup kicks off this Thursday, with matches nearly every day through mid-July. The opening game will even be shown at Paseo Park (see more about that below). For even more neighborhood news, the latest issue of the Jackson Heights Beautification Group newsletter is out too. Now stretch, hydrate, and lace up your most comfortable sneakers. We have a championship-sized list of events ahead.
